The retardation of the media is startling at times. Nothing has changed at all with the rules for exams. Like always, if your answer was clearly correct in an exam where spelling and grammar are not marked on yet you made a few spelling mistakes or had to spell a word phonetically or something, you got the marks for the answer. Some journo would have asked if this included text speak, taken it out of proportion and left me to explain this fact to everyone who reads the news. Text speak in itself is nice and ambiguous too, and if you're stupid enough to use it in an exam then you should probably be prepared for the marker to have no idea what the fuck you're on about.

Most exam markers probably won't understand what text speak is let alone understand it:p

What the hell ever happened to teach the damn brats how to speak the language instead of dumbing it down? These kids would get pwn'd on any test from previous decades when grammar, syntax and spelling actually counted for something.

As long as you can understand them, what's the point of grammer?

When I was teaching I always told my students to write or print clearly on papers. I told them that if I couldn't read it, it was easy to grade 0 (F). :p

I dunno, I've used more traditional abbreviations in my exams in the past, yu know, things like a "+" to stand for and, or using w/ to stand for with. Nothing quite like this pervasive plague of text-speak, but I do shorten stuff off, because in long blue books, every letter counts.

Are you suggesting that you had teachers who graded by the quantity rather than the quality?

It has only been a couple years since I was at university in New Zealand. When I was there, the professors were very strict about spelling and grammar (at least they were with me). No, I have a hand that ceases to be able to write afer so many letters, and instead just slaps down squiggles on the page after 10 or 11 pages of solid text. Every letter I can save is another letter of coherent important words that I can write.

Exactly. And if the marker can't be sure you knew the answer, you don't get the marks. Nothing new at all.

Text-speak, a second language for thousands of teens, uses abbreviated words and phrases such as "txt" for "text", "lol" for "laughing out loud" or "lots of love," and "CU" for "see you."

This is yet another product of our completley screwed up education system, They held an assembly on the subject at my school, and the principle said it didn't matter as anyone stupid enough to use text speak in an exam isn't taking them anyway. I'd like to repeat that our education system is completley screwed.

If the examination marker comprehends the answer given and provided the use of English is not what is being tested, then it seems unreasonable to not give credit. It's fairly bloody stupid to go announcing to folk that txt in particular is acceptable though.

As Monkeypimp points out this has always been the case. In a maths test why does proper spelling count, you can loose marks for that kind of thing in an English test.

Keeping in mind that we test English as a seperate subject in its own right, why should it be tested again in every other test? We dont test maths and science and music in English tests, so why test English in maths, science and music tests? People who are crap at English but good at maths (or science or music) ought to have exam results that reflect these weaknesses and strengths. It's silly if the only people whose results actually reflect their abilities are those who are good at English.

So, sure if the answer is comprehensible and demonstrates the capability being tested, credit ought to be given, but announcing as much and so encouraging people to use txt speak (and other abbreviated/slang forms of communication) is incrediably pointless and awfully stupid (in my opinion). But ensuring exam results reflect peoples' capabilities in each subject area rather than only doing so where people are good at the particular subject of English seems rather silly and counter-productive.

What's the big deal? It doesn't mean they can't speak English, they're just representing it a different way on paper. I could write English in Chinese characters or heiroglyphics if i wanted to, but that wouldn't make it any less proper or correct.

But, in an English exam I think it is perfectly reasonable to mark spelling, grammer and punctuation. But leave it out of the marking scheme fr other subjects.

LOL, as a result of the imprerialistic tendencies of 18th/`19 century Britian, Brit-English is the primary ligua franca in NZ. Along with te reo Maori and NZ sign, it's our 'official language'. Hence we have to do stuff like uses 's' more often than 'z', add superfluous 'u's all about the place, and spell 'gaol' rather 'jail' or loose marks on our uni essays. Damm you imperialists dogs I say!:D
