Emo? Schwaa? Of all the reasons for someone not to like them (long songs; "lack of energy on stage," show-offy at times; etc), I've never heard them called emo in my entire life. Care to explain that reasoning?

I saw Queensryche in Wallingford, CT last night for the 4th time this tour. The complete Operation: Mindcrime & Operation Mindcrime:II.

Dream Theatre is a great Robin to their Batman. :D

I am officially jealous.

I'm thinking about seeing them Tuesday in Cleveland. Don't know if I'll make it, though.

And as far as Dream Theater goes, I'm a fan. Not as good as the Ryche, however.

SIGNS SAY GO!!!

(If you don't, I will hunt you down and hit you across the face with a mackerel!!)

Seriously, it is a great show. Pam Moore is touring with them, and plays Sister Mary with the other actors when not singing. The video footage is all there, as is Mr. Ronnie James Dio for "The Chase" on MC:II. Stone does SO well that I no longer miss Chris DeGarmo. And the music is insanely well played.

PS: I had passes last night. :)

i like their music, but i'm not really a fan as its just.... not music i tend to listen to. when i'm feeling angry i listen to (non-prog) metal, when i'm happy i'll listen to drum n bass or jazz or blues, and dream theatre just doesn't really fit in there :-S

Not a huge fan - I was leant the albums by a mate who adores them, and I didn't really see why he loved them so much. Which is strange because I'm usually quite into that sort of stuff.

I love Dream Theater :D
Partly through sentimental reasons - them being the first band to get me into truely good technical music, into heavier music, into a whole range of music which I'm so very happy to have found.... plus I love them cos I think they're just awesome :p the drumming and guitar work can be simply mind-blowing to me...

Saw them in London and was amazing :)

Nah, I don't. While the band is technically skilled, the music is far too wanky for my taste.

Dream Theater are like a version of Rush who are trying to show the world that they're better than everyone else. It's really god-awful and embarrassing.

For starters, Petrucci is a wanker on guitar. Never a fucking simple riff... It always, always has to be something that's unnecessarily complex.

And then there's Mike Portnoy. Don't get me started on this doofus. Like Petrucci, he can never do a simple groove. It always has to be COMPLEX!!1!!1'2121@12!1213245091276910u5~! For somebody who changes time signatures every eight fucking bars, he's still pretty bland.

In short? "Ugh" is all I have to say about these Pub Rockers.

I think a lot of it depends on what you listen to....
Some albulms/songs I adore. Some aren't really anything special, and can be overcomplex and a bit wanky. But that's definitly not all of them, and they can do great catchy riffs which are simple, fantastic solos which aren't just an overload of technicality, fantastic strong drumming, great melodies, some wonderful basslines... Yeah, they do have a tendency to go OTT with technicality but it is worth looking at a range of their music. I have 7 albulms of theirs, and they all vary a fair amount, and just in the albulms there is quite a variety. (and then there are some overcomplex, wanky ones (or solos) which I still love to listen to in the right mood :p)

Haven't listened to them in aaaages, but listening to them again and might post some examples of what I think are their better songs...

One quick one is Another Day, which has great saxophone pieces in it.

I can listen to Rush if I want a mix of simplicity and complexity, and they never get wanky, even with Neil Peart's ten-minute drum solos. There's never a sense of "Oh, look, we're so fucking unbelievable!". Ever.

I'm not sure why I've never really gotten into Rush... From everything I hear about them, it sounds like I should love them, but the songs I've listened to have just never captured me at all.
Reccomendations of songs?

The best way to get into them is to listen to their most accessible work, which can be found on two albums: Permanent Waves (1980) and Moving Pictures (1981). However, the first song of each album should pull you in... "The Spirit of Radio" for the first, and "Tom Sawyer" for the latter.

I can't recommend any specific songs from those two albums, as the first has a total of six, and the second has a total of seven. All of them are equally good, though that goes for any Rush album (they make it a point to never release filler material).

Of course, I have to link you a video of theirs. :p

Dream Theater just kicks ass. I saw them in concert in '03 with Fates Warning and Queensrÿche. As the vocalist for Fates Warning said, it's complicated music for complicated people. The end jam with all of them on stage performing The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" was well worth the ticket price alone.

Pretentious wankery.

Much like Yngvie Malmsteen.

All the knowledge and skill with your instrument in the world cant give you enough soul to write a good song.

a good song is much like a good stew.

The more and more you throw into it, the less good its going to turn out.
Instead of keeping things simple enough, and then spicing it up to suit your artistic tastes, Dream Theater, and many "power metal" bands like them, tend to go for overkill effect.

It could be excessively long blistering guitar solos, or wailing keyboard segues, that shift three modes, and blah, blah blah......it varies from band to band, but the end result is usually....too much, and lacking in good taste.

I think Dream Theater would do better to strip away a bit of the "polish" away from thier sound, and make it a bit heavier, and a bit more raw.

This is why, when I finally conquer the world, Im making Kanabia the "Minister of Funk".
