Perhaps ACDC, or maybe Led Zeppelin, or maybe the Who. I'm not sure, they're all so different yet so enjoyable.

I vote Dragonforce!
(just kidding)

Really, this is a loaded question. Do you mean the rock supergenre, or a specific genre or era of rock, or what?

Personally, I think the Rolling Stones, with the exception of the song "Paint it Black" (which is brilliant) are terribly boring.

Define what you mean by "greatest", though.

personally if it wasn't for the rolling stones rock wouldn't be what rock is today, if in fact it wasn't for the british invasion.

Rock would be fine without the Stones. Three quarters of the British Invasion (The Beatles, The Who, and The Kinks) would still have revolutionised rock.

And then Black Sabbath would come and change the face of music FOREVER!!!

There are no end of bands from that era that proved influential in some way or another; and the statement could apply to them equally. Had the Rolling Stones never existed, there are no end of others that made rock what it is today to take their place - I could say that rock wouldn't be what it is today without Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground, and so on...

Statements like that always seem silly to me, anyway. It doesn't really say anything about a band. How's this - modern rock wouldn't be the same without Nickelback. Does this make Nickelback necessarily a good band?

Correct.

Depends if you class them as rock&roll, I guess.

Afraid to say it louder? ;)

Well, they seemed to classify themselves as rock'n'roll, considering the title of their greatest hits: "We Sold Our Soul For Rock'n'Roll".

I know these kind of threads. Things can get pretty personal. Im not afraid to say it in the first place though.

Point.

I'd say from that specific era, either Led Zep or Sabbath win.

In terms of influence on my particular music taste, Sabbath is in front by a fair bit.

Well, I don't like them much, but hey. Each to their own, I guess. :p

Depends what genre. Personally, I'd say Dream Theater (that is, if you're including prog as a genre)..

Greatest Rock band has to be The Rolling Stones if only for the fact that they were the first band that adopted the Rock Star look and attitude. Plus they have created some of the best music ever made in rock music.:)
