Something else happened during that chaotic scene, something that
convinced Chen of the monkeys' true grasp of money. Perhaps the most
distinguishing characteristic of money, after all, is its fungibility,
the fact that it can be used to buy not just food but anything. During
the chaos in the monkey cage, Chen saw something out of the corner of
his eye that he would later try to play down but in his heart of hearts
he knew to be true. What he witnessed was probably the first observed
exchange of money for sex in the history of monkeykind. (Further proof
that the monkeys truly understood money: the monkey who was paid for
sex immediately traded the token in for a grape.)

Thats wierd.....
I wonder if they also have monkey puritans who make monkey laws banning monkey prostitution because it goes against the monkey Bible, despite the fact that it's a victimless monkey crime... :p

Yeah. I'm human. I'm supposed to be smart. I can't rent an escort for a grape.

Why?
It's always been said that prostitution is the oldest profession.

I am reaffirmed in my claim that money is "the most natural thing in the world"
Cool, I knew our closest cousins were at the 'oldest trade' but monkeys! Go little capuchin primates.:D

Wow... that's a very interesting article indeed.
My fiance read something similar (I'm guessing it was about the same research) a while back. The monkeys apparently traded money for grooming as well, under enough observation.
The stealing, though, really seemed like the most telling part of the whole study. It's more convincing to me than the prostitution to demonstrate that they understand the money concept.

It's really the second oldest. The oldest is witch doctor.
Reminds me of this:

I still think it is prostitution but with Witch Doctor a close second to help with the STDs.

It does demonstrate that they understand possession. And monkey do have a sense of fairness, that's been documented ages ago. They react negatively to unfair treatment.

Indeed. I want to say that those studies were done with a different species, but I remember reading about them.
I thought the interesting part was that they reacted mostly to unfairness against them, while they generally would not react badly to unfairness against another. That persisted until they started doing it with family groups. Closely related monkeys did react when one of their kin were treated unfairly, even though they wouldn't react if it was a different monkey. All very interesting, and reminds me of some human beings =)

What if our God is really the God of monkeys, and the reason why nobody seems to hear from him is because we don't understand monkey culture or language?

Just done an (admittedly crap) bit of editing to a picture I found of Google Images to show what may happen to monkeys if they're continually exposed to gays, liberal media, and other such terrible things.

I know that lemurs aren't, I was talking about the decay in tropical morals caused by the liberal quasi-commies of the Democrats

Yeah, I bet when we die the monkey God is up there and he'll be like "Well, wtf did you expect? I mean, I sent Darwin and a bunch of other people down to help you guys out and everything and you still couldn't figure it out!"

This makes me wonder if we are biologically disposed to certain forms of economy. Of course there hasnt been one universal one yet, but there may be heavy ventures into the understanding of human interaction if there is.
