As unpopular or as popular as you want.....by popular music I mean any type of music that is not considered classical.

Most albums by most average acts....however, the best albums are full with great songs and it is those albums that can be considered the greatest.

Well, my favourite is "Inhuman Rampage" by Dragonforce, although I have listened to it too much lately - I don't want to make myself sick of it.

Ok Computer - Radiohead

Good album, but I think it's given too much credit.

Revolver - The Beatles
Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
The Joshua Tree - U2

Meh.

Nevermind - Nirvana

In Utero was better.

The Velvet Underground and Nico - The Velvet Underground

It's decent.

pah. we all know that most albums have only one good song on thems.

You listen to the wrong music, then. :p

1) Tool, Aenima

Probably their best. Great album.

2) Metallica, Master of Puppets

I find it a bit boring. In my opinion, Candlemass' albums Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall (from the same era) are better than anything the thrash bands did. I would still say Slayer's Reign in Blood is better than MoP, though, but not by much.

3) Talking Heads, Speaking in Tongues

I haven't heard it. Probably should.

4) Black Sabbath, Paranoid

Yeah, a classic, although I prefer their first album.

5) Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti

Led Zeppelin III - Led Zeppelin

Nobody ever mentions their first album either...

Elephant - White Stripes

Nah, no way. I don't have anything against them, but I wouldn't put them anywhere near a "greatest" list. The Black Keys do what they do better.

10 - Pearl Jam

It's alright.

Let It Bleed - Rolling Stones

Bores the hell out of me. I really don't get the acclaim behind this one.

9. Dirt- Alice in Chains

Underappreciated, this one.

16. Californication- Red Hot Chili Peppers

As much as I hate them, it's an OK album, but BSSM was better.

If we're defining greatest as "non-classical album I never get tired of listening to," I'd have to go with Godsmack's The Other Side. I like Godsmack, I like acoustic, and I can sing it. The best of all worlds.

It's a Tie between Revolver and Highway 61 revisited from those listed.

Doolittle is a close second.

Of course, My list of best albums is way different, you'd have something like Jethro Tull- Aqualung up top, followed by The Beatles-Abbey Road, and then K.T. Tunstall-Eye to the Telescope following third
Runner's up would sample R.E.M., More Beatles and Jethro Tull, some Bob Schneider, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan for flavor.

I guess I'm having difficulty defining popular music. Many of the choices that have been made just don't fit into the "pop" category IMO. For example: Kind of Blue and Court of the Crimson King pop music? We going to throw in Lizst, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky into this mix?

I heard that if you locked Chuck Norris and Vin Diesel in a recording studio for a year, the greatest album ever would come out. It would sweep all music awards shows. However, when asked about this, they said "music awards are pure crap" and ate knives to show their seriousness.

Otherwise, Tool's Lateralus.

He said anything that wasn't 'classical,' using the quote marks to avoid quibbles about the classical period of compositional western music, and further limited it to 20th and 21st century music. So I'm left to presume that it leaves out Cage, Glass, Britten, etc since those would be in a 'classical' section of a music store, the standard definition non-musicians/non music snobby people use.
