Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya of the ruling Hamas group has said he is willing to resign if this will end a Western aid boycott.
His comments came after talks on a unity government with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Sanctions were imposed this year by Israel and Western countries, which see Hamas as a terrorist organisation.
"If we have to choose between the siege and myself, we must lift the siege and end the suffering," Mr Haniya said.
Seems like they work to me....

Sanctions work if they cause real problems for the sanctioned. One's they can't just tough through.
Palestine has no industry, no economy, virtually no money - they have nothing to tough through with.
Sanctions also cause a lot of harm. South Africa's economy (which was very strong under apartheid) was badly damaged by economic sanctions.
Cuba is the slum it is today because of US sanctions.

Sanctions cause harm to the people of the countrys and to the governments of the affected country's IF they care about the welfare of the citizens there.
Sanctions would not work in country's where the government does not care about its people's welfare such as in North Korea.

They appear to be effective against North Korea as well. Jung is going nuts trying to find international banks that will take his money and business and the only ones left that are willing to do it are the Russians and the Chineese and they charge him exhorbitant fees for doing so. One of NKs first topics in the new 6 party talks will be to try to get the sanctions lifted.

A better example might be Zimbabwe.

They worked on Iraq, but unfortunately it caused the death and suffering of too many people.

Really? Even though the rest of the world is willing to trade with them?

No, it's not. By that logic, Rhodesia would have been a slum. Every nation on Earth besides South Africa and Portugal imposed sanctions on it, yet it survived and even prospered.

Hurrah!
We can defeat democracy completely by starving the general populace of Palestine!

You can either penalise those trying to kill and maim innocents by trying to bring internation pressure to bear on them, or you can ignore what they're doing, and thus encourage them to continue doing it.
Perhaps you'd prefer an invasion?

Oh come on, there are like... 180+ other nations in the world for cuba to trade with. Not trading with the US isn't harming them, its failed leadership
But it's not really near any big nations except the USA.
And since most of their economy would be based on tourism, their socialism wouldn't hurt them as much.

Other option -
Sanctions on ALL of the parties involved. Especially Israel.

Not being able to trade with a very wealthy neighbour is a very large blow. Who's close to them - Honduras... Bolivia... Haiti (2nd worst nation in the world IIRC)
It's doing better than it would have under capitalism with the same sanctions on it...

So what your saying is “give up or we will kill your families” only instead of just killing them were giving them agonizing deaths because of a few people
I’d rather not resort to barbarism thank you not only does it produce hate (and thus not solve anything) it also has children suffer life long problems as well as deny them any hope of digging out of there hole

Hamas has been responsible for heavily arming the Palastinian people, I would suspect that they fear the consequences of facing their own heavily armed mobs if starvation becomes rampant.
So yeah, our sanctions have worked, but this is hardly a typical case. Whether or not this is something to be celebrated - I am uncertain, I still haven't worked out this whole 'terrorists with solid democratic mandate' thing in my head yet.
