Perhaps we like trolls?

I find it quite interesting that people accuse other posters like MeansToAnEnd a troll (which I agree with) and of course say that trolls should not be encouraged by responding to their inflammatory comments. Yet it seems that MTAE has some very successful threads. He finds a topic that is sure to get people real riled up and by saying crazy things about things like slavery and becomes real successful. Whatever happened to not feeding the troll? Perhaps we all enjoy his arguably trollish threads more then we want to admit? It certainly seems that way to me. So a troll he may be but he is certainly a successful one. Clearly he provides his own vital part to the workings of NS. The forum would arguably be more boring without him and others like him. Your thoughts?

I think NS has gotten a little bit "Troll-Crazy", that is excessive troll feeding and accusing anyone who holds unpopular opinions(usually conservative in nature) of being a troll.

MTAE may be a troll, but at least he's an intelligent one. What I mean is, most trolls simply spew profanity-filled garbage dotted with spelling errors and gun smilies. MTAE, on the other hand, is usually quite articulate. I also find debating him to be good practice for one's debate skills. Sure, what he says is utter crap, but he doesn't let you take anything for granted. You have to continuously back everything you say up, even down to moral absolutes. At the end it breaks down, because MTAE is apparently amoral, but it's good practice nonetheless.

I agree with Rhaomi. MTAE will hold your feet to the fire in a debate. I think people need to not take his threads too seriously and realize that an outraged response is what he's after (and is he going to annoyed at us for saying so).

I come here for the fun of debate. Not that I don't believe what I write, but I enjoy defending my beliefs and sometimes I learn things. Whether the person I debate with is a troll or truely believes what they write doesn't change that. MTAE, however, is becoming too much of a cartoon to be fun anymore.

MTAE seems to often make arguements that fall apart very quickly. But the topics are so outrageous that we just have to respond so we can vent on him. His tactics are old now but I'm sure we will all continue to respond to his threads (yes, I'm including myself). His topics are so out of what normal society would ever suggest that it is something that people can respond to without feeling any kind of ambiguity. Life becomes simpler.

Of course his threads will end up ceasing any debate and will turn into simple screaming. I don't think debate is in the front of peoples minds when they click on a thread by MTAE anyway. More like the desire to gawk at a trainwreck.

It is points like that which make his threads so popular. Everyone wants to go take a look. Saying we need to outbreed Muslims is a view which will draw many responses. Simply saying we need to negotiate, or stay in Iraq, or have more religious tolerance doesn't exactly have the same pizazz. :)

I've missed a great deal of MTAE's history here in General, but the one thread that I did see him in, he was being berated for being a troll and a flamer before he even entered the thread. Even after that, he managed to remain rational for the rest of the discussion. His views were unorthodox, and perhaps a little extreme, but they were on topic, and he supported them rationally and logically. I would not necessarily say that I would have agreed with some of his views on torture, but the only real trolling I saw in that thread was the continual attacks made upon MTAE that were seemingly without any basis.

I understand that there is a great deal of past history surrounding this, so I don't know the whole story, but perhaps, just perhaps, he should be given the benefit of the doubt. Wait until he has actually joined a conversation before leaping down his throat for being a troll, at the very least.

It is also possible that people such as MTAE simply fill the role that everyone seems to expect them to fill. He is labelled as a troll, and treated as a troll, so why should he not act as a troll? Since it won't make any difference as to how he is treated, that is.

Besides, despite what any of us may say, you have very successful threads as I've pointed out. A troll you might be but everyone has no problem posting and discussing on the topic you give. Oh come on. I have plenty of unorthodox opinions, and have been airing them on General and in the UN forum for years. And that hasn't resulted in me being branded a troll.

I will grant that people sometimes leap on you for trolling when you aren't, but the way you express your opinions does enter into the realm of trolling at times, so the label is understandable.

Oh please. My politics are moderately conservative (in the same general area as Eutrusca's on a political compass), and my political ideals are anarcho-capitalistic.
