Ok, so today is 9/11. So, can anyone tell me what important and, possibly, world changing historical event happened today? (I'm thinking of 3, but can you give me more?)

Jack the Ripper killed his last victim, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated, and the failed Munich Putsch (led by Hitler).

I looked the first one up on Wikipedia, but I knew the other two.

Dammit, I was thinking of making a 9/11 thread like this. Bush allowed 9/11 to happen to get us all to change to the american way of writing the date!

Its all true I tell you.

Muhammad Iqbal's Day in Pakistan;
Inventor's Day in Germany, Austria and Switzerland;
Schicksalstag in Germany.

* 1799 - The coup of 18 Brumaire led by Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès (pictured) and Napoléon Bonaparte deposed the French government, replacing the Directory with the Consulate.
* 1918 - German Emperor William II abdicated, Prince Maximilian of Baden resigned as Chancellor, and Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed the Weimar Republic.
* 1953 - Cambodia gained independence from France and became a constitutional monarchy under King Norodom Sihanouk.
* 1989 - The Berlin Wall fell, marking the symbolic end of the Cold War, impending collapse of the Warsaw Pact, and beginning of the end of Soviet communism.

Berlin Wall comes down, Kristallnacht begins, Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch, the SS is established, Germany becomes a republic after WWI.

Very important day in German history.

Do you reckon they specifically wait for the 9th November before doing anything?

Well, I was thinking about:
The Berlin Wall (1989);
Kaiser Wilhelm abdicating (1918);
and the Munich Putsch (1923).

But so much happened on this day.

JFK wins election (1960);
Death of De Gaulle (1970);
George Bush wins election (1988).

9/11 just seems to be an important day!

I imagine that the Nazis picked November 9th on purpose, yes. Whether the Berlin Wall purposely came down on November 9th, I do not know.

Hard to say... do you think Schabowski knew what he was doing when he read that note?

Hmm, now let me see...

In 1494 the Family de'Medici become rulers of Florence

In 1906 Roosevelt was the first sitting president to make an offcial trip outside the USA (he visits the Panama canal).

And in 2004 Mozilla Firefox v1.0 was released. Go Firefox.

edit: Oh and it's independence day in Cambodia.

From my understanding the only thing that he mistook was the date that his decree was supposed to be effective. He incorrectly said it was immediate, but the plan was in effect to lift the travel bans anyway. Maybe he did so on purpose, who knows.

Heh. Interesting that last one. They didn't quite time it for exactly two years, but 2.0 came out just a few weeks ago for those who haven't noticed. It's a little slower, I've found, but that could just be my current computer groaning under the pressure of all the crud contained therein.

I always thought that it was just a thought of the comittee to suggest to gradually introduce regulations to do away with visas, nothing concrete at all yet.

Mine seems to have lazy spurts, every now and then it'll takes longer than usual to load any page. But that's just on my laptop, it works fine on the college computers.

Reichspogrom Nacht (aka Reichskristall Nacht) - the first nationwide, organized attack on jews in the 3rd Reich
1848 Revolution - set the stage for the creation of a German state in 1871

I imagine that the Nazis picked November 9th on purpose, yes. Whether the Berlin Wall purposely came down on November 9th, I do not know.The East German government loosened travel restrictions "effective immediately, as far as I can see".
The Beer Hall Putsch wasn't picked for a specific date, but because there was a gathering of Bavarian politicians. They did use that date a lot afterwards. There's a notable failed assassination attempt on Hitler's life on the 9th of November right before the war, as he was going to deliver a speech commemorating the Beer Hall Putsch.

That was 1939, wasn't it? So, after the war had started.

Apparently the Germans have a word for November 9th - Schicksalstag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schicksalstag)

Probably so they could shove their National Socialist "victories" in the face of the "November criminals".

Or something.
