They've released the new NVIDIA cards. You know how much the 8800GTS costs here? AUD933. The 8800GTX is AUD1207.80.

That's depressing.

High-end graphics cards are too expensive. Why would I want a graphics card for that much or several hundred dollars less when I could by a new console?
BTW, what's a good value graphics card? My computer has a Radeon 9200 *hangs head* and I think I really need a new one.

=/ I bought my laptop thinking I WANT SPEED, SO I CAN PLAY ELDER SCROLLS WHEN IT COMES OUT! but then I discovered I was like a 1.3 instead of a 1.5 in pixel shading, or something to that effect. it made me very, very sad - so I bought a 360 for far too much money, and called it a day. I now have a very speedy and very graphically-challenged laptop, on which I play solitare and NS. *sigh*

I have a reasonably fast computer with a horrible graphics card and a slow laptop with a decent graphics card. Gah. Google 'oldblivion', it makes ES able to run on substandard graphics card. It's reasonable on my computer, although all the shading and stuff tends to disappear from time to time. Very handy.

haha, I'm not sure I even still have the disc. every gamer at my college got a burned DVD of oblivion the *day* it came out (...my laptop is at least good for something), but I think I gave the origional disc away. that, or it's in a box in my old roomie's closet in manhattan. thanks for the tip, though. I'll definately check it out if I find the disc, though after obscene ammounts of time spent playing oblivion on the xbox, it's lost a bit of its charm.

hrmmm. come to think of it, I bet that "roma victor" game they advertise sometimes on the forum probably doesn't work on this computer because of the graphics card, too. :headbang: oh well.

Yah, you need a new one. You'll want something from the ATI X series or NVIDIA 7 series. If you want to be Windows Vista ready, though, you'll want a NVIDIA 8 series.

ZOMG, why would you buy a new graphics card when Deus Ex runs comfortably on a Voodoo 3?!?! Any game after Deus Ex is not worth buying IMO, playing maybe... just not buying.

Lol Vista runs fine even on 1gb RAM and a mobility X300.

Hehe. That means I can upgrade to the previous generation for much cheaper now. I pity the bastards who actually pay for the new stuff.

They'll soon come down in price. X1900XTs cost something like £400 when they first came out, they're about £230 now.

Yeah, if you want to play games then you don't want a laptop. Unless you're really rich.

Bearing in mind he's got an AGP slot at best, which rather limits his options. There's an AGP X1950 out now, I think. That should be pretty decent.
You'd only need an nVidia 8-series for DirectX 10, and that won't be supported by any games until after Vista's released (obviously) and it won't be required for quite some time after that.

Except that cards before the 8 series won't get DirectX 10, making them obsolete for games in a few years.

Ahh, right. I only got an AGP too, but I'll get a cheap PCI-E mobo with my 8 card.

And nevertheless, the old cards should be on their deathbeds in 4-5 years.

Ive got a R9800 256mb PRO, and it runs most new games fine on medium settings. Tends to overheat, but that can be solved with the aid of a standard window fan.
The 9800 isnt that expensive anymore either, I think theyre going for 90-110USD in the USA right now.

Sadly, AMD bought out ATI has pretty much destroyed the ATI brand name. I hate AMD now, and I may well have to overcome my long-time hate-hate affair with Nvidia and buy one of their damn cards.
