The official phobia thread!

I need a refresher from the elections. So, I want to know waht everyone's phobia is so I don't have to think about the elections.

And please, no "stupid people in large groups". That would mean you're afraid of the US government.

My phobia is lightning. I hate lightning. I even hate suspicious-looking clouds. I was watching "Day After Tomorrow" and got freaked out mainly because of all the lightning. Two months ago in marchign band a storm was coming up and I started hyperventilating and has to go inside. I wasn't even afraid of storms until I was seven (which is when I moved to a very storm-prone area). My fear intensified when lightning sturck very close to my house a year or two ago and scared the living bajeezus outta me (and messed up all the phone lines and the internet). Back in May lightning hit my neighbor's house (I didn't see the house get hit but I saw the flames afterwards ) and this summer after band lightning hit VERY close to my house, set the smoke alarm off and totally killed this little thermometer thing. So, I have justifications. :(

What are your phobias?

But I am afraid of the US government.

For a more relevant example of stupid people, how about the folks who made that movie. Why does Jake Gyllenhaal take off his gloves to climb the steel ladder when it's -50° outside?

And why do they burn the books while ignoring all that lovely wooden funiture downstairs?

Or, I could answer the question...

I'm afraid of other people. People behave unpredictably, and having to interact with them in a way where I won't know what they'll do causes me a lot of anxiety.

I need a day to recover from an impromptu meeting at work, so frightening it is.

I don't like spiders, though I'm not sure it comes up to a phobia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobia). ("A phobia (from the Greek φόβος "fear"), is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.")

I do get the creeps when large groups of perhaps not really stupid people with musical instruments passes by marching in step. :p

I'm most afraid of people, although I'm starting to overcome it. I used to get nauseous whenever I was around people, but I saw a psychiatrist and eventually started to feel better.

I'm also terrified that someone might have romantic feelings for me someday. That's scary.

Also, I'm afraid of dogs and elevators sort of scare me, although not so much anymore.

I recently woke up to a giant cockroach on my stomach. That freaked me out more than anything I've ever or felt. I hate cockroaches with a passion, and am currently involved in a long, almost seventeen year old war against them. I've killed way more of them than they have of me, but I'm sure they would kill me if they could. If I notice one within like 10 feet of me, my blood pressure and my heart rate will skyrocket, and I will start forming an immediate retreat strategy as well as a long term attack strategy which will hopefully kill it. I have around 15 cockroach traps scattered around my room. I've only seen two flying cockroaches, and have managed to escape both times with my health, for which I'm grateful.

Besides that, not much.

I was afraid of umbrellas for a long time. I had an umbrella as a kid that would snap shut really quickly and try to eat my fingers.

Now I'm afraid of being bitten by spiders. Not arachnophobia, because I like them when I know where they are, but when the startle me, I freak out. Can't put a glove on in the barn without checking for spiders. :(

IWhat are your phobias?

I have two morbid fears -- and I freak out for each one, and one thing that just makes my skin crawl.

(1) I'm not afraid of heights, but I'm afraid of climbing. Being up there doesn't bother me, but getting there scares the bejeezes out of me.
(2) Big trucks next to me while I'm driving also scare the crap out of me. I just know they're going to change lanes into me (again), and I have to get ahead of them or behind them as fast as I can.

Meat served on the bone is creepy. Take the plate away and bring it back without meat, even if I know it is the same meat, and I'm just fine with it. I can't eat wings, ribs, steak, or even fish or duck without my skin crawling. when I see the bone.

I have three friends who are terrified of clowns. I bought one a pillow that says, "Can't sleep the clowns will eat me..." over and over. I sheltered the second one from a clown making animal balloons by Krispy Kreme. The third, well I watched IT with her.

I don't understand the clown phobia or why it's so prevalent, but I certainly respect that it is a serious and intense phobia for many.

Well, I'm agoraphobic. But that seems to be a common fact amongst people here. I also have a great fear of anything that is at all poisonous. Poison scares me not because it will kill me, but because it will kill me painfully and slowly. Even animals which may not be poisonous but are even at all related to a poisonous animal scare me. Even animals who's poison only irritates still scare me. Heights scare me even more. That's primarily because once you start falling, you can't exactly stop. Not to mention you'll be concious through the whole god damned thing. Well, those last two are common, reasonable fears. Phobias are supposed to be unusual fears. So I guess my agoraphobia is definetly an "unusual" fear. Now I have to cause unrestrained horror to the two idiots sitting across from me. (I'm on a library computer.)

I'm very arachnophobic (I'm the only person I know who has ever been in therapy for a phobia when they were 12).

It's not quite a phobia (I tend to consider a phobia to be more "intense" than a run-of-the-mill fear), but I'm also afraid of heights (or falling from them. I don't mind being high up, as long as I don't have to fall/drop/walk off a cliff). And I get a little uncomfortable in large crowds.

I read a clip from "jaws" when I was about 5, that ends with bits of flesh floating on the surface of the water. I've never been able to swim in dark water...even in a swimming pool, since. and old children's toys. like, a room with old-fashioned tin-soldiers, ponies, whatever else, covered in dust...freaks me out. *Shrug*

Constraints (not small spaces, just the thought of not being able to move freely. straightjackets are not good, even if you put me in an open field. buried alive is out of the question.)

I have a feeling that the first one is because whenever I went in for the shots, the doctors always either lied ("this won't hurt" or just didn't answer my question "what does this one do?")

Needles - hypodermic, drips, sewing, pins anything like that. I had to get a jag last week to replace a small filling i've had since i was 14 and i had to take temazepan to ease my nerve, however, i still went rigid and i've been suffering from a severe muscle spasm in my shoulder for a week now. - but there was no hysteria which is a good thing. my nerves aren't shot to shit, just my shoulder.

tubes that go into the body - again drips, but also the ones that enter the nose and mouth and go down, your, oh, dear, throat. yikes.

I don't think so. Agoraphobia is a crippling fear that means one cannot leave the house or function in society at all without suffering severe panic attacks. It's seperate from social anxiety, which is probably fairly common around here (and which I have to some degree - it doesn't really manifest as a "phobia", though. Merely an unwillingness to interact in certain situations.)

Centipedes could disappear from the face of the earth, and I think we'd all be better off for it.

So as far as life on the planet goes, you have two legs, four legs, six legs, eight legs, okay fine, then why the sudden jump to a bajillion freaky legs moving like waves running across the floor, up the wall onto the countertop and over your roommate's toothbrush. You can't even step on them to kill them; they're 2 dimensional or something. Oh, I'm sure they do something good like eat some small microscopic parasite that would otherwise take over the world, and I'm sure someone here knows one personally, and they're a perfectly lovely creature and all, but frankly, they disgust me and really gotta go.

Now that I think of it, I don`t think I have any phobias.

If anything, perhaps a mild case of agorophobia. But it`s not that I`m afraid or nervous around people. I just dislike most people in general.

I like spiders. They eat bugs.
I like lightning. They`re nature`s fireworks.
I like confining spaces. They keep out people.

I hated the film `The Day After Tomorrow` it was plauged with scientific inaccuracies. Here are just a few off the top of my head.

If a pack of wolves were feasting on the contents of a ship`s galley, they would not waste their energy in trying to chase after people.

The `Ultra-cool` air in the upper atmosphere is also incredibly thin. As it descended to sea-level atmospheric pressure, it would compress, and in effect, get warmer.

Also, air is an excellent insulator. You could stick your hand in a 500 degree celsius oven for 10 seconds , and not get burned. Touch the metal rack however and you`d sear almost instantly. The rate at which things froze in this movie was ludicrous.

I could go on, but I`ve wasted enough time on this film already.

I have three fears which could be considered phobic in magnitude:

1. Needles. I haven't been able to get blood drawn in years, because even on vast amounts of Valium, I still have panic attacks when the needle gets near me. It's really unfortunate.

2. Making phone calls. It sounds silly, but something about initiating phone contact really frightens me. I'm perfectly happy to talk on the phone, or to initiate contact elsewhere, but I can't actually make calls to anyone outside of my immediate family without panicking.

3. Drowning - or, in effect, "water covering my face." I came very close to drowning when I was a small child, and have been frightened of it ever since. I can deal perfectly well with swimming and such as long as my face is above water, but I can't stick my head under at all without freaking out.
