Australian Senate ends stem cell ban
Teh big news here. Hurrah! My country is redeemed for that earlier unfortunate event about the government paying for preachers.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Australia's Senate narrowly voted to end the country's four-year ban on cloning human embryos for stem cell research, ruling Tuesday that the potential for medical breakthroughs outweighed moral doubts.
The decision -- a rare conscience vote in a country where lawmakers are expected to follow the party line -- sets the stage for the ban to be lifted entirely. The measure now goes to Australia's House of Representatives, but lawmakers had expected the Senate to pose the biggest hurdle.
Good to see some progress being made.

Well, they had to, didn't they. Medical technology is one of the areas in which Australian researchers really are at the top of the world, and they can't afford forcing their bright heads overseas, can they.

About time - we lose too many smart people overseas due to our small minded government because they do research in areas the government don't like.

I'm really happy about this.
It doesn't happen often, but every now and then, our government actually does something right.

It's happened marginally more often at the state level than the federal in recent years. But now that Carpenter is in control here, those days are at an end.

then again i have missed the new so much so i dont know if we got it or not
Australia deserves credit for this. A great triumph for liberty, and of course medical research. I hope that here soon we get results from stem cell research (i.e., an actual cure for something) so then I could say to the opposers "Hey, you oppose this medicine. You suck".
