Other races [Election 2006 USA]

Let's gather all the commentary about the various US Elections that don't relate to the Senate or the House in this thread. Use this for Governors, Propositions, local races that are noteworthy or delightfully silly, that sort of thing. Other threads on the subject will be closed or merged.

Celebration is fine, but let's keep gloating, flaming, and all the other usual forum offenses to a minimum.

Thanks.

Gathered from an earlier thread just to kickstart this one
I'm in a southern Red State, and my ballot was pretty much empty ... especially of Republican candidates. The Democrat Congressman will be reelected easily (and deservedly - his opponent is a moron), but the rest of the slate of partisan offices was Democrats running unopposed. I'm still not clear how we can be a Red State without any Republicans.

The only interesting race was a local one, that of District Attorney. That one may make the national news if the outcome is contested. Yeah, it's the Duke Lacrosse case DA, Mike Nifong. For some reason, people are still fascinated by that idiocy.I must confess, I'm fascinated by that idiocy. Do you think he's going to win? What's the local atmosphere when it comes to that guy? Do people down there think he's as much of a douche as the people I talk to ? Just curious....:DHis balloted opponent is Lewis Cheek, a Democrat running as an Independent. Cheek's platform is (I shit you not), "I will resign upon being elected to allow the Governor to appoint a new DA." Then there is county Republican Party Chairman Steve Monks, who is running as an unaffiliated write-in candidate. His platform seems to be based around bashing Cheek for refusing to serve, and stealing his anti-Nifong votes.

I think non-locals are more interested in the whole shebang than us locals. It's pretty clear now that there isn't much of a case for the rape charges, but nobody likes the Duke party-boyz either. I think everyone just wants to toss it to a judge and get it over with.

Nifong for the win.

Deval Patrick (D) is leading (as shown by polls) Kerry Healey (R). He's leading with 55% and her with 33% for the race to be Governer of Massachusetts.

Under the current Governer, Mitt Romney, Massachusetts has become one of the worst states to live in besides Alabama and some other state.

Since Kerry Healey is the incumbent Lieutenant Governer, if she doesn't get elected, Massachusetts will change.

Go Deval!

CNN is now projecting a win for deval, making a 3 governorship pickup for the democrats so far.

Deval will be the second black person ever elected as governor in the United States.

Anyone following Blago and Topinka in Illinois?

Blago (corrupt bastard) will beat Topinka (dumb bitch) in most scenarios. I wrote in Mickey Mouse.

I predict Pat Quinn will be the Gov in a year after Blago gets hauled off into the federal pen. Quinn is a Democrat I can support. He is qualified and honest (rare in Illinois).

Good news:

With 88% of precincts reporting, Wisconsin's incumbent governor, Democrat Jim Doyle, is projected to defeat Republican challenger Mark Green. Current totals give Doyle 52% of the vote to Greens 46%

Bad news:

With 85% of precincts reporting, Wisconsin voters have approved a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, as well as civil unions for both same and opposite sex couples.

And it was all thanks to the trumped up fear of "activist judges" redefining marriage.

...and I was hoping we would be the first state to NOT enshrine bigotry in our constitution. :(

Colorado is such a strange state. The governorship and both houses of the state legislature have gone to the Democrats, and our House delegation just went from 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats to 4 Democrats and 3 Republicans, but the electorate still hates homosexuals: the state constitution was amended to define marriage as between one man and one woman, and a referendum extending domestic partnership rights to same-sex couples was defeated. Thanks for clarifying my status, fellow Coloradans, I guess I am a second-class citizen.

Wow. I had no ide ahis approval rating was THAT low. Low yes, Single digits? Wow. Incredible.

And in 2002, the Dems lost by not running campaign ads. Maybe a few on TV. But their entire campaign was online running something called "Taftquack." Meanwhile, Taft's campaign was calling his opponent an "unabashed liberal" and bashing him for opposing the death penalty. He won by 20 points. In spite of my vote.

Good for Arizona. I guess they don't feel the need to designate homosexuals as second class citizens.

The "color" of the state doesn't seem to have much to do with banning gay marriage. The people of my own state of Michigan, which is considered to be blue, decided to enshrine their fear of "teh ghey" in the state Constitution in 2004. Wisconsin also did it yesterday.

So far, AZ's the only state that's had the chance to ban it and hasn't done so. It's about damn time someone decided, "You know what? That idea sucks. Really. Give me an effing break. Are we that damn paranoid?"

May the Supreme Court of the U.S. praise the voters of Arizona when it eventually rules that gay marriage is legal in all states.

So did Colorado, and here a referendum aimed specifically at providing domestic partnership rights failed. This on a night when our House delegation and the state government all went blue. Go figure. Maybe the Ted Haggard Incident had the unexpected result of scaring Coloradans into thinking, "Shoot, if the Reverend Ted is a bottom-toucher, we better amend the constitution quick or the Gays will be grabbing us by the weekend!"

I agree. Here in Florida, Mark Foley was still on the ballot that's because he had resigned (Needs to be castrated) and his replacement wasn't able to get his name on the ballot. He lost but it was fairly close. That doesn't mean that Floridians were voting for Mark Foley. Floridians are in fact fed up with these sex offenders and predators and are by majority supporting much longer sentences for them and also in support of the Death Penalty for certain cases.

I do think that having Mark Foley's name on the ballot screwed it up for his replacement though. I know I wouldn't have voted for the name Foley on the ballot. If I were for his replacement I would have written his name in.

I was glad to see that the Missouri Stem Cell Initiative passed. Apparently, all Rush Limbaugh's bluster and accusing Michael J. Fox of lying still didn't block it.

That's right, it did. Yay. And I saw a clip of old Rush being pissed off at the Administration for screwing up the elections and all. Lots of history being rewritten in the Conservative camp this week. I'm sure that by the time the new Congress is sworn in, they'll have decided how and by whom they were betrayed (it's always about being betrayed).

LOL, leave it to Rush to absolutely refuse to eat humble pie. Just a week or two ago, the man was going on and on about how there was *no* way the Democrats would gain much in this election, how the "drive-by media" was just spinning it to make it look like they would. Then, it happens, and his answer isn't, "Oh, well damn, I was wrong." Instead, it's, "ZOMG! WHO F'ED UP?!?!"

That and the refrain, "You didn't win, we lost!" I keep seeing in the threads.

Speaking of which, where's MeansToAnEnd? Haven't seen the lad since before Tuesday.

Forumbanned for a while. He'll be back tomorrow. 'Tis a shame; his head might have exploded while he was gone, and we didn't get to see the aftermath. Oh well.

I thought that might be it. I agree, it's sad to think of him suffering through the last several days alone, trying to pick up the pieces and glue them back together. I suppose getting banned is an occupational problem for him. He is my favorite troll, though, and I mean that in a nice way.

Oh, absolutely. He's a closed-minded, hateful trollish asshole, but at least he's a fun closed-minded, hateful trollish asshole.

He can be quite eloquent and it's obvious he thinks about the topics he posts, as hateful and closed-minded as they are. The Rosa Parks/Mark Foley thread was brilliant.

I cant beleive we elected Mark Sanford here in [SC]. Im a republican and so is he, but he SUCKS. Hes the worst governor Sc has ever had. It appears that the superindendant of education will be Jim Rex:) [YES!], who has a lead of about 450 votes right now pending a recount. [If he wins no vouchers yay!]

The GA elections were largely...unfortunate.

Sonny got reelected (surprise surprise).

Kathy Cox got reelected over Denise Majette as school superintendent. I thought Majette had a chance, but apparently not really. So we get to keep miss stickers on textbooks and taking the word evolution out of science classes.

All in all, I think three of the people I voted for actually won, and two of them were incumbents.

As GA stands, education will continue to get defunded, someone other than the farmer gets to be commissioner of agriculture, moralistic people who care little to nothing for the populace and are in Sadie Fields' pocket are well entrenched in charge, and well, it sucks.

But at least the federal government got an overhaul. =)

I think I know the exact thread that he was forumbanned for.

Anywho, the only "other" election I really care about was that my dad won Sheriff of the county for the second time. No surprise, really, as he is extremely well like and has done a brilliant job since he was first time. Won by a landslide. We have'nt really been able to figure out what was going through the other guy's head when he announced his candidacy, as he had no platform, was a nobody, was fairly new to law enforcement(Only 5 years experience compared to my dad's 30 years), and everyone on the force was wondering what the hell he was thinking.

But, it turned out well, and I'm happy. That's about it.

Congrats to your dad. Could you send us all "get out of jail free" cards now, in case we exceed the speed limit or some other infraction? And the other got his name in the paper, I bet he'll be angling for another elected post soon enough. They probably told him, "Go run against Seangoli's dad, you won't win but you'll find out if you like it and get some good experience."

Thank you.

And near as I have figured out, the guy who ran against my dad this year is the friend of the guy who ran against him last time, who lost to my dad(the guy my dad ran against last time was the current Sherriff, whom in a way was appointed, and lost to my dad that year), and was a bit irked still by the fact that he lost to my dad.

Anywho, apparently the guy who lost this year has a police chief job in the bank in the town that he's from, so really he had nothing to lose either way.

As a Missourian myself, I'm also very, very glad it passed. Because of the order in which counties' votes were counted, it looked pretty terrifyingly bad for a while - and then the St. Louis and Kansas City votes started showing up, and I decided I didn't have to be ashamed of my state after all. So now we have a higher minimum wage, whatever stem cell research is allowed under federal law, and a Democratic senator. Not a bad election day for MO!

Excellent to see that the voters of SD didnt fall for the christianist abortion ban or the insane proposition on 'punishing judges retroactively' that some maniacs got on the ballot.

Congratulations to my own great state of Arizona for rejecting the christianist anti-gay-marriage law, but fie on the nazi smoking ban.
