Google Satelite Imagery
I was fooling around on google maps and found this nice shot. If the Cold War were still going on, the Russians would be pissed.
Look what I found while searching through the Polyarny Inlet.

That is the Russian carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and a nuclear submarine. I'm about 90% sure that the sub is a Typhoon class SSBN. They are the largest subs in the world. The fictional Red October was part of that class.

That is a Kirov class CGN. It is the only class of ships in any navy today that can be considered a battle-cruiser.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=murmansk&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=17&ll=64.583731,39.814775&spn=0.00338,0.011351&t=k
The sub towards the center of this picture is one I'm having trouble IDing. If I had to wager a guess, I'd say it's a Charlie class SSGN. It's too big to be of the HEN (Hotel Echo November) family and shows a pre-Victor class hull.
There are plenty of smaller subs in the pictures on this site. I'd have to guess they are either diesel subs like the Tango class or decommissioned HENs that have yet been scrapped.

Definitely a Taifun, definitely.

THe Kiev and Minsk can be found on google satelite imagery too.

Cool stuff. While you're at it, take a look at the world's largest industrial area (well, from what I've heard, anyway).

Starting at the turning basin, keep following the ship channel to the right. You'll see countless industrial complexes (a lot of them are unbelievably massive). It's stunning from above, but when you're actually driving through all of it, it's even more unreal.

Not surprised...those are taken from Middletown, which is very close to the Groton sub base and Electric Boat (the sub manufacturers). We get alot of world naval traffic in the area
Edit: you can see them from the highway and from Harbor Park (a bar) when it isn't underwater, as it usually is.

The pics form the original post aren't from America. They are from Polyarni in Russia. That base is the HQ of the Northern Fleet.

Why would the Russians be pissed? They've known since the 60s that American spy satelites were always taking sneak peaks at their new weapons and whatnot whenever they were out in the open. That's why they built sheltered naval yards and submarine pens.
Just cause the rest of us peons can see it shouldn't bother them more than than the fact that American intelligence services could

The fact is that outside of America and a few European countries, no one else could see it. Now anyone (including resistance groups) would be able to see it.

There weren’t any viable "resistance" groups in Soviet Russia any more than there were in the US.

That is true, but it didn't stop the KGB and GRU from being paranoid on issues like this.
The Brazilian navy can be readily viewed at Rio de Janeiro naval base, for those interested.

To think that for the D-Day landings just over half a century ago they had to find old postcards from Normandy and the like to get information of what the coast would be like for palnning the landings.

I love how the US ships have parts of their flight decks whited out.
Google Earth if you zoom in on Newport News you can see a carrier under construction in one of the dry docks.

Something else to consider is the timeliness of the imagery. It's not up-to-date, in fact, it's probably several months to a year old.

Those look more like tents. They probably have a bit of the deck torn up and are not anxious to have the below-decks rained on. Either that, or it's hot and they want some shade.

As I look at the white stuff, I honestly think that it is a tarp covering of some sort.
