statistics are showing that in America as a whole, violent crime is decreasing.
I don't know about elsewhere though.
I think we just hear about it more, nothing gets by today's media....

Statistics may say one thing, but look at how many gruesome acts are taking place on a daily basis. Fact of the matter is, "if" crime is decreasing as a whole in the US, the act itself is getting worse. What I am saying is that although fewer people are committing violent acts (or at least getting caught for them), the violence that does take place effects more people than before.
Another point that I have is this. The the reason that things are getting worse is because there is no more accountability anymore. People do what they want without consequence.

Well they keep adding new laws, meaning there's more laws to break. Used to be a fella could go about doing unsavory things without it being deemed 'criminal'... What's this world comin' to?

Depends on how you mean. Crime incidents reported? Charges? Convictions? Prison population? Crime per capita? Crime total?
If it's total, then yes it is increasing because the world's population is increasing.

Or, it might be because the more commercialized news places higher emphasis on sensational stories than it did in the past; violence sells, and the more brutal it is the higher your viewership numbers are. If you look at some of the old police reports or murder scenes from the early 20th century, for example, you're going to find that crime was just as brutal then...there were no "good old days".
Personally, I feel crime is decreasing overall but its nature is changing to take advantage of shifts in the global economy; effectively, crime is becoming globalized just like commerce.

It was, but not last year:
Violent crime takes first big jump since '91 (http://edition.cnn.com/2006/LAW/06/12/crime.rate/index.html)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Murders in the United States jumped 4.8 percent last year, and overall violent crime was up 2.5 percent for the year, marking the largest annual increase in crime in the United States since 1991, according to figures released Monday by the FBI.
Robberies nationally increased 4.5 percent, and aggravated assaults increased 1.9 percent, while the number of rapes last year fell 1.9 percent, the report said.
Wow, tons of feedback...
I read in the newspaper today that my city is sending 100 more police officers to patrol city streets, just the other night a US Marine was killed in a bar fight trying to break up a fight..
I goto that bar...
Things are getting crazy..

Depends on what you mean by increasing.
Increasing by number.. or by crimes per person
I would say given that there are more and more people that crime is increasing..
but crime RATES are dropping.

I just read that according to Readers Digest, NYC is the nicest city. But you'll still get mugged. It's just that you're likely to hear a "thanks."
