So, apparently tomorrow is election day around here, if I didn't know that from the hundereds of reminder post cards I recieved over the last few weeks, I might know from the calls I have recieved all day long.

Calls from candidates for every office, calls for "friends of" every candidate, calls about sexual scandle, tax cuts, illegals, calls of people opposed to the state questions, calls for people for them, calls from homeschool advocacy groups, calls from the teacher's union, calls from the fraternal order of police......... and then, when I am sitting down to work on my novel just before I turn the ringer off on the phone I get a call.

"Hello, this is president George W. Bush, and I am calling to remind you to get out to the polls tomorrow and vote republican"

so.......do democrats get these calls? because I might just change my affiliation if it means I don't get spam phone calls for hours on end every freaking November.

We don't have to have any party affiliation up here. I got a call from somebody involved with the New York Times. I'm assuming they were doing polling, but I hadn't had remotely enough coffee at that point to want to speak with people.

Other than that I wasn't harassed all day. Of course, my district seems to be very safely for my Representative Dave Camp (R) and my Senator Debbie Stabenow (D). I'm kinda surprised that I didn't get any calls from the Governor candidates because that has been a bitterly contested fight for months and the polls are extremely close.

Oh, and I did get a call from the Fraternal Order of Police, but they just wanted money.

depends on the state. Here we have closed primary elections so if someone in your party isn't running you can't vote. It's a pain in the you know what for a third party to get on the ballot here, we are already finding that out and hubby isn't running until 2008.

Not that I can get a straight answer out of any of them as to what they believe on anything anymore. I just got a call from a real person:eek:

"can I count on your vote for <guy I haven't heard much from> for judge?"

it's easier to get someone to vote against someone than it is to get them to vote for you, anger runs on the surface now, make them mad and get their vote, you can't expect people to think for themselves.

You guys elect judges?

Yeah, and that's why Harris County (where I live, a place called Houston) has some of the most unscrupulous judges in the entire nation.

These "conservative" judges like to throw out appeals like they throw out their hamburger wrappers. They also dislike giving needy people disability, and instead giving it to minorities who aren't even disabled.

I can't exactly say that I'm for voting in judges...

Nope, they're just like any other judges.

One of the recently-elected judges, Ted Poe, wanted to throw out appeals completely. He also tried to pass a law that if any convicted person was later found innocent, they would have to carry out their sentence in full.

Even if they were given the death penalty. And people voted for this jerk-off.

I am pretty sure it's one of those things most people don't pay attention to, my local district judge said all sorts of stuff to get elected and until about a week ago I didn't even check to see what he was up to. I will probably vote for him again just because he didn't do anything overtly messed up.

The idea being that the primaries are a party caucus only, it's not, technically, an election as it means nothing beyond being the party's annointed one in the general.

This would make MUCH more sense if the general elections actually came to more than a choice between republicans or democrats though.

We have open primaries in my state, so it doesn't happen that way here. Of course, that means that Republicans can vote in the Democratic parimary and vice verse so they can attempt to choose a weaker candidate for the other party.

I don't think I 'get' the US at all.

I think that's largely because there isn't a single "US" to get at all. At election season we're reminded that we're a union of fifty states with fifty different systems.

Yes. Democrats get these calls, but we tend to get them from Republican push-pollers trying to encourage us to be apathetic. The big one these days is to start by talking about the Democrat, and then call back automatically when you hang up so that you think you are being harrassed by the Democrat's campaign.
