Telegraph confirmed...what an odd name...

Thousands of dollars?!?!?! I think I'll make my own thank you.

One more question: Does it control speed directly or tell the engine room people to change speed?

Ebay (http://search.ebay.com/ship-telegraph_W0QQfkrZ1QQfnuZ1) has some cheap ones...some are tiny though and probably dont move...

It's called that because it has no control over the speed. If you could se a little higher up, you'd see 2 arrows; one is attached to the handle that the captain/helmsman/duty officer moves. The other is inside & notes the response from the engine room.

When you move the handle, it rings & sends a note down to the engine room, where a similar device is located. The engineers of duty hear the ring, look to see what's beeing called for, & change speeds accordingly. When they complete the action, they ring back to the bridge with acknowledgement.

It's also called an annunciator.

Well you know that thing was only a signal system - it doesn't control the throttles to the engines. It just lets the ship engineering department know what power is desired for propulsion.

If you're quick-eyed you might have seen how that worked out in Titantic (crappy movie otherwise).

Yay ringing. Interesting...

Thank you all, especially Shikishima who seems to know a lot about ships. :)
