It Is Well With Your Soul?

Here's a hymn: It Is Well With My Soul. I had forgotten about it. We got a new pastor about two years ago, and since he controls which hymns are sung, he must not like this one, becuase it hasn't been sung for a while. Anyway, it was played for the offertory this morning, and I went home and looked up the words. Here are the words for the first verse:

When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like seabillows blow
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say
"It is well, it is well with my soul"

My question is based on the first verse, more than the others. Is it well with your soul, no matter what happens? I'm not asking if you're always happy, so much as whether you say "Okay, this is how it is."

Why is it well/not well? What do you do, based on that wellness or lack there of? Any other things you feel like saying, too.

PS - Here are the words to the last verses: obviously more Christian, and more particular to a Christian's life.

Though Satan should buffet tho' trials should come
Let this blest assurance control
That Christ has regareded my helpless estate
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin - O the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin - not in part but in whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessèd hope, blessèd rest of my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
"Even so" - it is well with my soul.

Do you mean do I ever feel resentment about the circumstance I may find myself in? One would have to be an incredible person not to feel some kind of annoyance when things don't go your way. Your soul always being well isn't really possible.

I don't really think of resentment and annoyance being on the same level. Might I be annoyed? Of course. But that's the same thing as sadness: it passes. Resentment is much more lasting and much more poisonous.

In the end god did not pay more for it then any number of inosents over the years have ... hell he payed less. Even the phisical being of his son was taken up not just his spirit.

Though in the end the only one collecting on the "pay" was god ... why he chose to charge himself so much, seems pretty silly to me

All things will pass, is that it? I certainly think resentment is wrong but there are situations that people live in where they are powerless to change things for themselves. Hard to avoid the resentment in this case.

We're all powerless to some degree: depends what realm we're talking about.

I agree; it is hard to avoid resentment, even for those who can change things. But, hard is not the same as impossible. And if it's not impossible, there is still room for responsibility (even if it is impossilbe, there may still be room for responsibility, but that's a different discussion.)

I think it might be more personality then anything else that explains why some people are whiny jerks and others can be hit repeatedly with challenge after challenge and will still always have a smile and a positive outlook. You never can really tell.

So, how much should a person change (or attempt to change) his/her personality in order to change his/her outlook? Should s/he change?

I have to disagree with the being able to tell part. Maybe not from appearances, but just sit and talk to someone, and you can usuallt tell after a bit. Sometimes it's hard to tell someone who is joyful (an outlook: it is well with his/her soul) or happy (fleeting emotion).

Dude, I call him as he likes. He wants "Yahweh?" Awesome. If he wanted to be called "Assfuck McGee"...well, I'd be more than happy to oblige.

Mind you, my initial statement is entirely a subjective opinion based on my own interactions, but many others have agreed to it as well. I can't begin to guess how to change someones personality. Best I can think of is for them to WANT to change to begin with and then have someone sit on them to remind them continuously of their promise to try to change. If they don't go crazy from you smothering them then they should see improvement. :)

You may not be able to tell immediately but I'm sure you could talk to others who know them better and find out how the person reacted to trials in their life or in troubles in someone else's life. Or get to know them better yourself. If it happens to be negative and you cared about the person then you could try the above.

sorry, I don't like it *that* much. unfortunately, for hymns the only thing you're likely to find on the internet is a completely tacky midi file. devotional music has rather different (...I'm trying not to say "lower") standards than the other sorts. it's kind of fun to sing, anyway. very, very simple melody though. very minimalist - given the source, it's not at all suprising. I'm afraid to even try finding a recording of it, though - I tried to do that with an old hymn once and the grating midis were unbearable. if you recall "Mighty Joe Young" - a movie about a giant gorilla, they appropriated a hymn form the same era and pretended it was an african lullaby. "come thou font of every blessing" - I like that one much better, actually. my parents were livid they secularised the song, but I didn't particularly care. the simple melodies can be nice, but again, devotional performances are very rarely worth listening to...

They called it an African lullaby? It's a traditional American melody. That annoys me some. Did they change the words? That would anger me some.

the melody was in a fake african language. when I tried to sing it to myself after the movie, I said something like "wimbawimbo kamakazee" instead of "come thou fount of every blessing" - it was still lovely.

there's not a consensus even within the religions sphere what a soul is. the egyptians identified two seperate and important parts - an early greek christian would distinguish between all sorts of them; Nous, Pyche, *more I forgot the names for...I wonder if Logoi have direct correspondances or if the term can even be applied to a human...* - in Yoruba there are 5 elements I think, or maybe it's three. heh, fairly simple things in our standard western cosmology were topics of severe debate way back when. you should see the miaphysites argue with the monophysites. blood has been spilled over how many qnomes and parsopa's jesus had. (just don't call the miaphysites diophysites, or they'll go nuts!) haha, you asked a really, really complicated question.
