Two words, one band: The Hives.
Best damn show live ever.
Favorite Bands
Nirvana, Kyuss, Electric Wizard, the Melvins, Black Sabbath, Dead Kennedys, Refused, the Doors, etc. etc. i'd be here forever :p
Nowadays, though, I mostly listen to stoner or doom metal, but that changes from time to time.
Favorite Songs
I could pick lots, but i'll leave it to a couple by the above artists: "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath, "Gardenia" and "Spaceship Landing" by Kyuss, "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" by Nirvana, "Funeralopolis" by Electric Wizard...
Favorite Albums
In Utero by Nirvana and Sky Valley by Kyuss are probably my two all-time favourites.
Even, if you wish, Favorite Concerts
Probably the best gig I ever went to was Mudhoney, early last year. For a band I routinely see live and enjoy every time, i'd have to go with Spiderbait.

Even though I don't get into their recorded stuff so much, they're brilliant live, yeah. :)

I really don't care about the amount, as long as you don't post like, 20 bands, 100 songs, 20 albums, stuff like that.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins
It's a good album, and I really dig the darker rock tracks on it in particular. I can rarely listen to it in one sitting though, since i'm hardly ever in the mood to listen to the softer stuff at the same time as the heavier tracks. I liked Siamese Dream better for consistency.

So, yeah, I agree with you.

I just find it just so hard to listen to. I mean, "Thru The Eyes of Ruby" just after "Tales of a Scorched Earth", continuing through "Stumbleine" and then into "X.Y.U"? Nah. The progression of those four songs sums up what I think is wrong with the album perfectly. They don't seem to fit together. If I were to make it myself, i'd put all of the softer stuff on one disc (I do enjoy it, just not at the same time as the other stuff.), and then the "heavier" stuff on another, gradually building up a darker atmosphere, starting with something like "Love" and ending in something like "X.Y.U."
Maybe that would ruin the feel of the album, since Billy was probably trying to throw people like me off. I don't know. I just get the feeling that something isn't quite right with it. As it is now, I usually just end up skipping over the tracks i'm not in the mood for.

I'm liking Devil Doll and Mr. Doctor's Dies Irae at the moment.
It's very much class.
Like the Foo Fighters did with In Your Honor?
I haven't heard it (the only FF I really enjoy is the first album), but IIRC that's the double-cd album, one of which is acoustic?
If that's it, well, yeah, something like that, I guess.

Maybe, yeah. Well, songs like "Zero" sound different to the heavier tracks on disc 2, and I generally listen to them sequentially anyway, so meh.

Which is actually starting to be a problem, as Pandora seems to like it a lot as well. Although the variety seems to be much better this morning; the new "QuickMix" feature is very cool. At any rate, my station list tends to change rather radically on a weekly basis; this week its, electronic music. Next week, whatever gets the most thumbs up. :D

Hm. I haven't been there in a while, I'll have to check out this QuickMix.
Basically, its a special "station" that picks (I assume at random) from among one's regular stations. Feedback from individual songs/artists is automatically applied to the appropriate station, as well. Rather than increase variety by constantly skipping around the station list one's self, QuickMix does the skipping around for you.

I tried, I did...but it just didn't take. If anyone wants, I'll send them my 1.8 MB HTML file that contains my entire at-the-moment-current 12,833-song iPod library. That does not could songs that are on CD & not on there, 2 or 3 CDs not on there, & the various tapes that I have not ripped onto there.

As opposed to...?
Favorite Bands: Metric, Wir Sind Helden, Ladytron, Tom Petty and Supertramp. I actually have a list of my top 20 bands somewhere around here.
Favorite Songs: Well, I guess my favorite bands tend to have my favorite songs, same with favorite albums.
Even, if you wish, Favorite Concerts: My favorite concert was Coldplays X&Y tour when they came to St. Louis. I have seen a lot of concerts and that one absolutly blew me away, they did every awesome thing a band could do, from giant yellow ballons, asking audience members about what song to play next, singing into people phones and just a ton of energy. A lot of people dont like their music (especially indie kids) but they are amazing showmen.

I actually watched their recent ACL show (where they had Michael Stipe as a guest performer) on PBS a few weeks ago. I definitely don't find their music particularly good, but their performance was actually enjoyable... Never mind the fact that the vocalist looked like a total dick with his antics. :p

Records, Reel-to-Reel, cassettes (on an analogue deck), 8-Tracks...
I have no turntable, & much of what I want isn't on vinyl.
Reel-to-reel has always been a joke. No one liked that shit.
I have tons of cassettes still.
8-tracks are so few & far between. Plus finding a player? Damn.
My problem with tape-based media is that they wear out, & easily. Even if I never use them much, they wear out. I didn;t start buying CDs until 2000, when I had to; there were no more cassettes. I hadn't made the switch because I had no portable CD player. Then I got one. Now, I keep everything digital, & that includes ripping some stuff from tape.

1: Records can be a hassle, but once you get into them, nothing's better.
2: Reel-to-Reel was cumbersome, but it was very close to the sound of vinyl, and since the tape was in a shell, it was more difficult to directly damage the media. Pretty expensive, though.
3: I hope you have an "ancient" tape deck. The newer models (starting in the late 1980's) sound like absolute shit compared to the ones from the 70's.
4: Which is sucky, because 8-Tracks are far more durable than cassettes, plus they sound better.
5: I haven't had that problem with cassettes, though that's more to do with better production standards from different manufacturers.
As for me, I only buy vinyl, unless an artist/band I like releases something that's only available on CD. I love vinyl, because it's not just good to listen to --- it's probably the best archival format there is. You can buy a record, leave it unopened, and over a hundred years later, it'll still be in the same condition. A CD will deteriorate before that time, unless very special precautions are taken.
And as far as ripping goes, I'm into it. I rip my LPs to my hard drive, and I get decent results. It's better than playing my records and having the stylus wear them down more and more, so I'm not complaining... Though there is a company that manufactures record players that use a laser rather than a stylus, and the playback quality is unprecedented (light over metal anyday). They cost about $15,000, but I'm not too worried about that, as I'll definitely have that much disposable cash when I'm older.

Well, whatever works for you. Who am I to knock it?
My big selling points are space-saving & portability. It's bad enough I have a good chunk of wallspace taken up by CDs; I can only imagine what that would've looked like with vinyl. (No doubt much like Rob Gordon's flat in High Fidelity)
How does a CD deteriorate? Past immersing it in water & having the reflective surface peel off. (which I've had happen to fucked-up burns later used as coasters)

Are you kidding me? His place fucking rocked, man!
And it's the chemical composition of most CDs, though I'm guessing the technology's improved enough to increase the medium's lifespan considerably. My dad lost a Chicago album because the CD literally began to melt on its own.

I guess, but I'm not jealous at all, oddly enough. I guess that might be because I have near-mint condition pressings of Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures, all with their original jackets and inserts.

Eh?
Firstly, cart before horse - the vast majority of vinyl records pre-digital were produced from original reel-to-reel recordings, and so if anything the quality you should be looking for is fidelity to reel-to-reel not the other way round.
Secondly, what is this 'tape in a shell' malarky? Reel-to-reel tapes lived on spools, not shells, and even threading them onto a player often chewed up or mangled a bit of leader tape. Do that one too many times and you have to reach for the razorblade.

Yeah, the reason I'm not seeing them on this tour is that I've spent about £150 in the last couple of months on gigs. I'm very poor. :( :(

1: Well, I was basing my statement on the media itself, as a few producers back in the late 60's decided to record music directly to vinyl, and it sounded better than reel-to-reel transfer (no tape bias "hiss", enhanced clarity). I guess I should've clarified.
2: And I'm not going to argue here. I should've done a bit more research before saying that.
