Let me guess, despite being called an "improvement" it takes even higher specs to do the same stuff + some more for all the extra unwanted features?

Of course. It wouldn't be an operating system if it didn't.

What are the system specs required to run that thing?

Why Vista? It looks like a SuSE on drugs (but manages to be slower than the chameleon). The only new features are the restriction management and the popups of the Windows guard.

Why would anyone install a Vista beta then?

How much did it cost? because I was thinking of getting it since I need I new harddrive anyway. I'm thinking I'm going to get a bigger HD and vista at the same time, install vista and start fresh.

it's not out yet as stable version. there are still many bugs. If you want to make a clear cut, go ubuntu!

I will of course use Vista eventually because I will have to however if you want to see where all this is heading read the following article on "Trusted Computing" if you haven't already.

Because you get Chess Titans! Also they finally made a decent theme that I like better than windows classic. (xp theme sucks balls)

I expect the worst of them gone by Service pack 3 or 4.

Those who asked about Ubuntu: Ubuntu is a very user-friendly Linux-distribution. It uses GNOME as Window Manager.

LOL.

I didn't mean that Gates was, I doubt it (too obvious).

Just that this would be the kind of thing to look out for. At any rate, it's a sure road to a fascist world dictatorship - media control, ability to revoke users (ie blacklist somebody the government doesn't like from using ANY software). It's just waiting for somebody to come in and link it all together.

I'm beginning to think I should invest in a set of long-lasting pens and a large amount of paper.

Nah, just get Linux. My only problems with Linux are:
1. If there are no Linux drivers for your hardware you have to get new hardware (unless you know how to write drivers).
2. Most games don't have a Linux version. But then, you can just get a games console.

vellum works better for preserving things than paper - though it's made from lamb-skin, so as a vegan I can hardly advocate you write on that. I've often day-dreamed about a hard copy of my blog being one of those things archaeologists find and it changes their view of history forever. josephus, the venerable bede, and feralnostalgia (http://www.xanga.com/feralnostalgia)...blogging really is narciscistic, isn't it?

I have Vista beta running right now. It's a fairly okay operating system. Runs fine. But sometimes when I run the Sims 2 it gives me a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) for no reason.

Other than that I have no complaints. It's certainly running better than Windows XP is. I'm dual-booting the system and can choose between either operating system. Vista runs fine but XP runs as slow as molasses on a cold January morning.

The point is that it's written down. The pen is far, far mightier than the sword, my friend. Sure, they can burn the paper, but if enough copies of it are distributed, they're going to have a hard time tracking all of them down.

In addition I'd probably bury a few copies somewhere out in the bush just to be sure.

Yeah, I'm probably going to dump all the writings of mine I deem important and plonk them in a journal. Perhaps in the form of poetry, but I'm not sure yet.

I've got to admit though, I do like the look of the interface. But it's pretty easy to find XP interface skins that look pretty much the same anyway. As it is, my XP looks more like OSX than it does XP.

On the bright side, Linux does at least run Firefox. I frankly cannot stand IE. I might wipe this computer when I've got my new one and load Linux on it for the heck of it. If anything goes wrong, at least I can still reinstall XP on it and offload it.

BTW, it's narcissistic.

The intent of long-lasting pens was so that I would be able to keep writing after the system is locked down. I expect that in about 5-10 years here.

....]

It was a few weeks ago, but I kind of liked it too.

I was expecting it to smarm it's way out of my screen, and ask me if I'd walked my dog today, and could it recommend a nice dog therapist, oh, and did I have a dog?

Actually, it was quite pleasingly retro. No wizards at all.

I'm sure they'll get the patronizing wizard-infested intrusive deceptive stuff working before release, tho ;)

I used Vista RC1 for about a week before going back to XP.

A few things I didn't like:

- stupidly intrusive security stuff (having to say that yes, you really do want to do that, every time you click on anything vaguely usefull gets tedious.)

- networking options and windows seem to be spread all over the place, with none of them being easily accessible, or intuitively located. Usually I just resorted to searching Windows Help and clicking the link in the relevant article when I was trying to get too any networking-related window.

- it takes so much more resources to do any simple task - even to just have it showing a blank desktop with no applications running. Under XP (MCE 2005) I almost never have more than 15-20% CPU usage in day-to-day tasks (firefox, msn, word etc), but on Vista it never dropped below 50%, even when not running any programmes. Save sort of problem with RAM - never dropped below about 65% usage.

There's alot more, but I stopped using it about a month ago so I can't remember specifics...
