Beauty Pagents? OK or not?

What do you think of beauty pagents in general? Are they fine and dandy? Are they imoral meat markets? Are they anti-feminist objectification meat markets? Do the women wear too many or not enough clothes?

(This was inspired by a recent article from here in Japan regarding the choice of this year's Miss International Japan - Hisako Shirata - who previously stared in a borderline soft-core porn film. Article (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/news/20061103p2g00m0dm019000c.html))

If an adult female or male is involved, nothing wrong with them.

I think the kiddie version is a pedophile's wet dream.

Agreed. The kid ones practically ask pedophiles to come.

Dang - left the "should be age limited" option off the poll.

Adult ones I've got no problem with. Oh, it probably DOES contribute to objectification and our skin-deep, superficial view of others; but frankly I don't see either as of overwhelming importance. And personally, viewing the human body as an object of beauty seems a good thing.

Anyone who is against beauty pagents should come to Belgium and see Miss Belgium Beauty.
It's really hilarious how the flemish women try to speak french, and the walloon women try to speak dutch.
If you've watched it once, you'll keep on watching it.
And of course these women are sometimes beautiful

That's the main reason I included and voted for the nude portion. It's a lot harder to pad and tape up the body (as is done in most contests) effecively when it's nude.

Agreed on both points.

Not interested in them, but my sister-in-laws sister won some nice scholarships. She was in the Miss Oklahoma pageant a few years ago.

I used to think beauty queens were dumb, but a lot of them a quite bright. Just not the above mentioned girl.

I personally think that the whole thing should be stopped on moral grounds - it's quite frankly horrendous. These women parade around, and, to be honest, people only watch it because these women are attractive, an opinion which is yet to be contradicted to me.

I understand that these women want to do this. But does it help society's morals in general by glorifying the "size 0" culture and glorifying what are effectively Barbie dolls?

I really don't care what consenting adults do, if they want to parade around half naked and try to be pretty, whatever.

I do know kids who are subjected to the kiddie pagent circuit and it makes me sick.

My own daughter wants to do one because her friend does, well, she wanted to, until I talked her out of it.

Don't even get me started on the Child Pageants. If ever there was an excuse for a clampdown on anything, it's that.

I saw one young lady on This Morning (British Morning TV Show) - she was 10, had a fake tan, fake nails, hair extensions, make-up...and her mother encouraged her. I was shocked. And I mean shocked. There must be something seriously wrong with someone to want to expose their child to a lifestyle of dressing up like a hooker to please men.

Which, when you look at it, is all it really is.

That was the responsible thing to do.

Adults in beauty pagents re fine. My best friend did for the scholarship. She said the bathing suit part was not an issue as she was comfortable in a one piece. A bikini would have been a different issue. I let my daughter do one pagent at age 5 because she really wanted to try it. It got the desire out of her system and for Christmas that year the whole family gave her a tiara. That's all she rally wanted! LOL

But yeah. Pre-pubiescent pageants should be a crime.

But after they hit puberty, they should be legal. Different, sure, but not illegal.

the word fuking was used as an example for the stupidity of 10 year old girls, their parents who do this sh!t and the people who promote it and my overall discust for the whole thing. that is not hard to understand.

Before I begin, let me make it perfectly clear that I don't like child beauty contests. But when we discuss bans, where does it end? Do we ban children from the internet until they are 18? Do we stop all sales of "bad" PC games? Do we keep them from drinking and smoking until 18 or 21? Wai a minute, some things we do ban; some things we don't. How do we choose? What is our basis of choice?

Indeed it is. It might only be banhammer on the nexus war forums(you can name weapons in the game, one of the mods on the forum named her sledgehammer the banhammer)

Choosing, I don't know how. We just do.

But, of course, I am not sure if we should ban these pedophilic 'pageants', but they need to be dealt with somehow.

beauty pagents are no worse than dog shows or the 4H cattle raising competition.

if a woman wants to compete with other women over who is prettiest, i dont see anything wrong with it. maybe to be fair they should have written standards of female perfection the same as the breed standards for the dog shows but i guess if they want to take their chances, thats their business.

Mind you, of course, my standards might be a tad different. (Veronica Zemanova? Fuck that, I'll that Kate Dillon, thanks.)

If we have the Nobel Prize, we should also have a "top-end looker" prize.

Anyone who wins both in the same year can be named "Overlord of the planet" for a year.

We already have "Miss World". We could also have "Mr. Planet".

And if anyone wins one of those and a Nobel Prize in a year, they get to rule the planet for a year. It'd be ace.

And, if there is a Miss World/Nobel Prizer and a Mr. Planet/Nobel Prizer, they have to marry, have kids, and become the first world monarchy.

(For 5 years. Then they rule Belgium, Luxemborg, and andorra for the rest of their lives.)
