What do you think is the funniest Shakespeare tragedy?

I would say Macbeth. Macbeth is such a whiny bastard.

Hamlet. It's funny because everyone dies.

Romeo and Juliet, because suicide relay races are one of the most asinine things that someone can engage in.

Macbeth, because Macduff's 'tree disguise' of making every one of his men carry a twig was enough to fool Macbeth (and the witches, in foresight?) completely into thinking the forest was moving. Uh huh.

Macbeth. Partially because we watched a movie of it in my English class that had some really bad acting. In that movie, the third murderer just randomly killed the other two, and the guys threw Macduff's kid onto a sword instead of just stabbing him. That, and lines like, "Mother, he's killed me!", make it seem really funny for a tragedy.

Hamlet, hands down.

"Do you know me, my lord?"

"Yes, exellent well, you're a fish monger!"

etc.

Hamlet was the funniest, but only because he was fucking nuts.
But the only Shakespeare work I can stand is the Comedy of Errors.

There's the whole comedy cobbler routine at the start of Julius Caesar.

And all the rest of it.
Ho ho how we laughed.

Blatantly Macbeth. The walking tree gimmick, the hilarious babbling, and in some video adaptations the absurd acid-trip second witches encounter.

I think the witches were just being ironical and fucking with our mortal heads and such. I like the witches, they're cool. and something about a floating baby head...hrm, I voted for air force one, though, definately the best.

its a tough choice. king lear is the whiniest. "my favorite daughter refuses to stroke my ego so im going to disown the bitch"

mcbeth is a hoot "have at it, i cant be killed!! ill fight with one hand tied behind my back!, what did you say? you werent really born? oops, nevermind"

but romeo and juliet is my top choice. how many times can someone kill themselves? just how dead is dead and wont you please just DIE.

very funny stuff.

oops no im wrong, its your fault for not having it on the list

richard the 3rd is the most funny shakespearean tragedy.

richard is completely transparently outrageous in his plotting to become king.

"oh brother let me plead your case with the king" he then convinces the king to execute his brother

he kills <someone important> on the battlefield and propositions the guys wife as she takes her husbands dead body to the church yard. THEN SHE AGREES TO MARRY HIM. he, naturally, has her killed

he has himself appointed guardian to the little princes then has them murdered.

he is completely out of control in the most outrageous and hilarious manner.

richard the 3rd is the most funny shakespearean tragedy.Ah, but technically, Richard III is a History, not a Tragedy.

"I am but mad north-northwest; when the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw." ~ Hamlet

I'm confused about the poll - by "funny," did you mean "absurdly over the top" or "that one had some funny lines" or...? :-) Hamlet has some excellent comedy, like the entire Osric scene.

I watched that in my class as well. The teacher kept rewining it to Macbeth's beheading scene..over..and....over...and over...and over.

We rarely get a production of it around here. It's kinda one of those "once in a lifetime" tickets, but it is by far my absolute favorite of Shakespeare.

It's so dark, so bloody, and so moving.

Oh .... uhhh ... and funny ... yeah ... that's what the thread is about ....

I've often enjoyed the fact that I could have killed mcbeth. I was born by c-section, too. mcbeth would be screwed if it happened today....er, more screwed, that is. I suppose it didn't turn out too well for him even in the origional.
