What so scary about...

Urban legislators? I've been getting 2-1/2 tons of mailers this cycle about the "threat" of electing legislators from cities or other urbanized areas. Even the stuff on TV with repos trying to strike fear into people's hearts about what the "urban democrats" will try to do if they win congress (which I'm quite certain they will, at least one of the houses).

Why is there reason to fear at all? What has parochial thinking done that can be regarded as so vastly better?

Because if they win, God will go out the door, all marriages will be homosexual, our taxes will fund social programs, all newborns will be sacrificed to Baal, and of course, no guns. Gawd I hate urban liberals:rolleyes:

1. They're statistically more likely to be liberal Democrats
2. They're more likely to be black, Hispanic, or women
3. They're from the city

It should be pretty clear why people fear urban legislators. Sad, isn't it?

The bolded one is the one I just can't wrap my brain around. Racism, sexism, etc. that's all understood as the unspoken part of the platform anyway. But, why the particular lockjaw on cities?

My guess is it could be an attempt to appeal to that old "city slicker" stereotype despite the fact that it kind of went out of fashion around the 1920's or so. You know, that rich guy from the city with his college education and technology trying to destroy the traditional values of rural America by barging in to local politics...that one.

(Plus, since most people live in the suburbs anyways, it's not like your appealing to "country folk" or anything in the first place.)

You know, I really don't like city people much. They are all arrogant, snobby, and prickish. But I am just a good ol' small town boy :)

I'd like to know if that's first hand experience with a sizable sample of people from cities, or nothing but anecdotal.

Coming to Uni, I have been thrown in an enviroment of kids from Chicago. They are really something else, i tell ya. I am from Southern Illinois, so maybe I don't get the whole Chicago thing or something. -shrugs-

In some people's minds urban = black. You wouldn't want a black guy making laws for you, would you?

Tripod?

Tripod is pretty scary, what with all those shitty sites and baleful use of HTML coding.
