Most Memorable Movie Deaths

I know I'm a Trekkie, but that's now why I'm going with this one.

I'm going to say Spock's death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I have to imagine that the Trekkies who saw that in theaters when it first came out had to be in shock that Spock would get killed. I get goosebumps when Kirk is on the bridge and gets the call from McCoy that he better get down to Engineering and hurry.

Kirk's face when he sees Spock and has to be restrained by McCoy and Scotty is one of the few cases where Shater's trademark overacting actually enhanced a scene.

Kirk: Spock.
Spock: Ship... out of danger?
Kirk: Yes.
Spock: Don't grieve, Admiral. It is logical. The needs of the many outweigh...
Kirk: ...the needs of the few.
Spock: ...Or the one. I never took the Kobayashi Maru test until now. What do you think of my solution?
Kirk: Spock...
Spock: I have been and always shall be your friend.
[Holds up his hand in the Vulcan salute]
Spock: Live long and prosper.

I was going to mention that one. I also liked the murder scene, because it's so brutal and uncompromising. The cop telling her she can only get her money back by killing him and then she takes so, so long to batter him to death and there's no sound but of typewriter hitting flesh and her sobbing.
Awesome scene.

Also Beth's death in 'Breaking the Waves'.
"Is Jan better?"
"No, there's no change"
"Oh.....maybe I was wrong?"
(you need to see the movie to understand this exchange)

Say what you like about Lars von Trier, but there's no denying he knows how to make emotionally-wrenching scenes.

My favorite death has to be when Patrick Bateman kills Paul Allen in American Psycho.

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
Paul Allen: They're OK.
Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.
Patrick Bateman: Yes, Allen?
Paul Allen: Why are their copies of the style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
Patrick Bateman: No, Allen.
Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?
Patrick Bateman: Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

[raises axe above head]

Patrick Bateman: Hey Paul!

[Allen looks...Bateman bashes Allen in the head with the axe, and blood splatters over him]

Patrick Bateman: TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU, FUCKING BASTARD!

I always crack up during that scene, especially the "Yes, it is!" response to the raincoat question. :p

A great choice from one of my two favorite movies.

My other favorite movie (Apocalypse Now) has two memorable deaths:
Chief Phillips dies on a spear and Kurtz's "the horror, the horror" death.

Some other classics:
Paul Baumer's death by sniper at the end of All Quiet on the Western Front

Spencer Tracey's death in Captains Courageous

The deaths of both the Wicked Witches in the Wizard of Oz ("I'm melting! I'm Melting!")

Charles Foster Kane's death in Citizen Kane

Several in Shane

The shower scene from Psycho

The gold paint murder in Goldfinger

The bikers in Easy Rider

Belle Rosen in The Posiodon Adventure ("I guess I'm not a champion of the Women's Swimming Association anymore")

The death of the title character from Charlotte's Web

The open death of the skinny dipper in Jaws

Chief suffocates McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Russian Roulette in The Deer Hunter

The exploding Mr. Creosote in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Pyle's suicide in Full Metal Jacket

The botched execution from The Green Mile

But the all time best was the death of the title character in Old Yeller (that scene is one of the few that still makes tear up)

While not in the same league as Tony Montana or Private Pyle, I would say that Susan Sarandon's death in 'Stepmother' is quite memorable. In fact, my wife just broke out into tears when I asked her what the name of that movie was...
