What's my impact on biodiversity?

Your total score was: 46
The average user scored: 46

Eco-Student (26-60)
You have an intermediate impact on the environment. You probably recycle, re-use products if possible, and try your best to conserve energy. You perform many "green" actions, however you may want to become better informed of the numerous conservation opportunities available. There are many eco-conscious alternatives you can insert in your everyday routine to help conserve biodiversity. You have made steps down the right path to become a friend of the environment. Now keep moving in the right direction!

A lot of my things are more to lower my heating and electric bill than out of any conscious environmental concern. Also, I grew up very poor so I can't stand the idea of buying a bunch of excess disposable shit that I really don't need. I used to be an extremely avid hunter and fisherman so I still keep up on state and local environmental legislation.

I seem to be an "Eco-Warrior" although I really don't perceive myself to be such.. but the again, I'm German, and what is considered to be plain old average (like sorting your rubbish, using receycled paper and double-print, have insulated windows, use public transportations, take my own bags to the grocery store etc.) seems to be a special effort to those people who designed the quiz..

Its is a special effort here in America. Like its a big deal for me to get up and go down the hall and put bottles in the recycling bin, when the regular trash chute is so much closer.

See, that's why we have all the different trash cans aligned in the same spot, and even nation-wide color-coded the same way so that even the most xxxxxx won't have an excuse. :)

Eco-Friend (61-80)
You have a high environmental conscience. You probably stay well informed both locally and globally about environmental issues and pending legislation, and you regularly go out of your way to conserve energy, influence others to adopt environmentally sound habits, and reduce your impact at work, home, and recreationally. You may have a few small ecological vices but overall you are helping biodiversity conservation.

Eco-Slouch (0-25)

You have a high impact on biodiversity. Unfortunately, it's mostly negative. Although you may sometimes recycle aluminum cans or buy recycled protects, you do so only out of convenience. If there is a recycling bin in an arm's reach of you, no problem, but if extra effort is required, your eco-friendly attitude quickly goes into the local landfill. You rarely stop to consider where all of the disposable cups and plates you use go, and keep the air and heat on in your house with only your comfort level in mind. Your environmental consciousness is low and you have a lot of room for improvement. The good news? Now is the perfect time to take the steps toward becoming a more eco-friendly occupant of the planet. Print out the test questions, and use them as a guideline to greening your life.

Resource use and consumption - Where I live I have no easy access to recycling or places that give good choice of products to buy. As I don't ahve a car I am not easily able to travel to places that to.

In most of the other areas I did much better than average.

Not having a car, an air conditioner, or a heater; having legally mandated trash separation; and avoiding the annoying 10 billion plastic bags shops want to wrap up a purchase with here in Japan helped.

Ah, yes. Now I see that. You're absolutely right (I voiced a similar opinion in my post above).

What drives me nuts are thos electrical appliances that you can't really switch off. Either "on" or "stand-by". What is that?!? I ain't gonna climb behind the shelf to pull the plugs.

I could probably save a lot of energy and money - too bad it's all inclusive in the rent.

I was horrified at how much packaging there was on stuff in Japan. Individually wrapped packets, within compartmented plastic trays, with a plastic wrapping around that, within a cardboard box, which is wrapped in an outer layer of plastic, which is handed to you in a plastic bag.

Congratulations! You are the ultimate conservationist. You base your everyday choices on what is best for the environment. You rarely use any disposable products, compost all your food scraps, and are politically active in the environmental arena. You make sure your workplace and home are 100% "green" or well on their way. You eat low on the food chain with a predominantly vegetarian or vegan diet and use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible. You are doing your part to preserve biodiversity. Keep up the great work!

And shop clerks who don't understand the concept that when I ask just one single bag or no bag at all (in good clear Japanese, as confirmed by another Japanese person on more than one occassion).

My Japanese is non-existant (except for nama beeru hitotsu/futatsu - is that correct?), so I just ended up accepting them. At least there were plenty of bottle & can recycling bins though.

Yep, that's correct Japanese.

There's officially alot of recycling here, but I'm skeptical. Most separation is into burnable and non-burnable trash.

Just a few years ago, the US military sued over dioxin pollution from the Jinkanpo Incinerator's burning household garbage near Atsugi Naval Air Facility.
