Teen arrested for raping his mother

Albertville, Ala. -- Police say a Marshall County teen raped his mother to get revenge on his brother.

Police say 19-year-old Gary Helms, Jr., raped his 45-year-old mother this past weekend at Willow Terrace Trailer Park on Doyle Drive in Albertville.

It's a twisted crime that police say Helms admits.

"From what we understand the rape stemmed from an argument between him and his brother. And apparently they were arguing over a girlfriend. And the rape was some sort of retaliation towards his brother," said Sgt. Jamie Smith of the Albertville Police Department.

It was unusual retaliation on an unsuspecting victim.

Authorities say Helms' mother was apparently passed out drunk on the couch when the rape started.

"During the attack she did come to and recognize her attacker. (Reporter: As her son?) As her son," said Smith.

That's when, according to the police report, the mother "tried to get away, but he held her down until he was finished."

"It's totally sick is what it is," said Smith.

Helms was arrested and charged with the 1st degree rape of his own mother.

Smith says it's hard to wrap your mind around.

"Shocked, shocked would be more a better way to describe it. That somebody would dip to the lows to do something of this nature. It's just pretty much a shock to the conscience of the general public," said Smith.

Helms is being held in the Marshall County Jail on $100,000 bond.

A man police say confessed to raping his own mother is now being investigated for sex crimes across the Valley.

The newest case involves a child.

19-year-old Gary Helms, Jr., was arrested in Albertville in October accused of raping his mother.

It's a crime Marshall County Sheriff Mac Holcomb finds despicable.

"This is about as hideous of a crime as I can think of. Even murder itself, I don't think in my opinion is as bad," said Holcomb.

Since then, Helms has been connected to the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl in Lauderdale County.

Investigators also say he's suspected of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old in Marshall County.

The alleged incident happened back in the spring in the Albertville area.

It's still under investigation.

If Helms is found guilty of all crimes against him, Holcomb says there's no place in society for a person like that.

"I can only give you my opinion of what ought to happen to a sick, sick person like this. He should be, either be shot or put in prison under the prison, the keys thrown away and he never see the light of day again," said Holcomb.

Helms is still being held in the Marshall County Jail on $100,000 bond.

"Passed out drunk" really doesn't mean much. I pass out drunk every night, have been doing it for years. Sobering up before going to sleep really doesn't seem worthwhile.

Sheriffs ought to shut the fuck up. In fact, there should be a law against any public servant participating in the miscarriage of justice which is public speculation about a crime before trial. The media does it, and I'm not saying that's a crime ... but an officer of the law should save it for the judge or jury.

I desperately want to make a joke about this one, but even I recognize some limits to good taste.

It's abhorrent, mainly because it's rape (molesting a sleeping person is rape, since consent isn't given. Waking your lover up with caresses can be OK, but you want to be careful the first time you do that, perhaps a kiss on the cheek).
Incest is not to my mind wrong, between family members of sound mind and of adult age. (I keep hinting that to my sister, but she doesn't react well.) If we were the only people left on earth, and my mom was nagging me to, and after a few weeks without alternatives ... sure, I'd have sex with my mom.

Having sex with some person to prove a point to some other person (his brother in this case) is callous, but not inherently wrong. Sometimes you discover an aspect of your own personality by doing something your instincts tell you not to. But not usually. Your own feelings are a far better guide.

But rape is where it becomes seriously wrong.

So I've got: it's inherently wrong on ONE level (rape).
Stupid on one level (revenge on his brother.)
Rather odd on one level (having sex with his mom.)

"Feeling sick" is just admitting that the bits of your brain which are forming your opinion are so far from consciousness that you cannot distinguish them from organic disfunction. DO NOT let your gut make moral decisions ... the gut can digest anything ... with practice, it could digest human faeces. You think your gut is more righteous, more morally discerning than that of a dog? Dogs have no problem with rooting their moms. And dogs eat vomitus and faeces. A dog's gut is pretty much like a human's gut. Trusting your "gut feeling" is like letting your dog vote for you because you can't be bothered doing it yourself.

The whole story has not been heard. It should not be heard, until it is heard in a court when this young man is tried. Unless it is necessary to protect persons not of legal age who are involved, or to protect national security, it may then be revealed in all the details tendered to the court.
(Of course, different rules may apply in the US. This just seems right and proper to me, that allegations not tested in court should not become public knowledge without the subject's consent. And that any decision reached by a court should be public knowledge, including all the evidence which was tendered.)
