Make sure your fingers aren't dry, so you can get a good grip when you snap them. If they're too dry, they'll slip, and you'll get a faint noise rather than the classic *SNAP*.

Can you already do the standard middle finger to thumb move?

In that case I can't help you.

Put your pinky and ring finger on your palm, touch your thumb with your middle finger, and quickly pull your middle finger down to the base of your thumb.

These people don't know what they're talking about. Just grab the end of your finger with one hand and pull back as hard as you can. It'll eventually break, causing a loud snapping sound. If it's not loud enough, just break another finger.

Finger strength has a lot to do with it. Get one of those things guitarists use to strengthen their fingers and in a few weeks you'll be poppin' so loud the neighbors will complain!

I can pull 167 dB. ;)

Interestingly, I click my fingers on my left hand (I'm left handed) with my thumb & 2nd finger (the longest one, can't remember the names of them), but on my right hand I use my thumb & 3rd finger. I wonder why that is?

On reflection, maybe it isn't as interesting as I first thought. :p
