Does anyone know what basic everyday clay you use in a basic ceramics class actually is? Like the mineral(s). I mean the plain gray stuff that turns white when fired. I think its kaolin, but I'm not sure if that's all it is.

Anyone?

hydrous aluminium phyllosilicate less than 2 micrometers in diameter

(Kaolinite is one of them, as are montmorillonite/smectite, and illite)

there are a bunch of other minerals in those groups...
for Kaolinite, its kaolinite, dickite, halloysite and nacrite
smectite includes pyrophyllite, talc, vermiculite, sauconite, saponite, nontronite and montmorillonite.
illite includes illite.

kaolin is pretty much the answer to your questions

kaolin is a group of mineral's like Kaolinite, that makes up your standard surface clays, thats about the simplist answer for you.
