Teachers, some questions.

I want to be a High School teacher when I grow up. Fuck trying to make big bucks. I would prefer to sit within a medium sized room full of shuffling, bustling, laughing teenagers, and then ultimately yell at them. Although it's likely their parents would attempt to sue me for psychological damage to their children.

On a serious note, I do want to know what you've studied (eg Bachelor Degrees within what field, and whether university or college), as well as whether you've enjoyed your teaching experience so far. Plus, I would like to know how much you made starting out, so it will give me a rough estimate on how big (or small) my house will be.

I'm not a teacher, but my boyfriend is. He got his BS in biology from a university, then did a one year teaching credential program. He isn't teaching biology right now, but he does hope to end up teaching high school bio (at the moment he's teaching two science electives to middle schoolers). He absolutely loves his job; I doubt he's ever going to change profession. Bear in mind that this is his first year teaching, so he may get more jaded as time goes on. :p

Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with a teaching major of English, a teaching minor in Computer Education, and Japanese Studies.

Master of Science in Counseling and Educational Psychology with emphasis in Technology in Education.
(This is why I hate having to tell people my degree titles)

Both were earned at a university. As for salary, Nevada starts off a teacher with a Bachelor at around 28k a year. A Master gets you 32k a year to start; I make more as an assistant English teacher in Japan currently. And I do love teaching, I've been at it for three years and while I have had some issues and problems, it has been, by far, the most rewarding job I have ever done.

Even if it means dealing with students lined up outside my door demanding candy. ;)

I'm currently studying secondary English education at the undergrad level at Boston University.

Not sure what I plan on getting my masters in...depends on if I decide to go corporate or into professorship.

Salary is the highest in the Northeast.

First year teachers in Broward county Florida start at around $38K a year. That's more than I make as a college instructor, but considering how much more work they have to do, and how much more time and bullshit they have to deal with, they don't make nearly enough.

Yeah...first your going to have to develop some biases before you can be a teacher. You hate gays? Fatties? Black folks? Chicks? Guys? Mexicans? Arabs? Transexuals? Pick one, or create one of your own!

Sorry...I didn't go to a school with great teachers, if it isn't obvious.

Is that with a BA or MA?

Biases... biases... Um... Let me see... Oh, I know! I hate kids who sleep in my class, cheat, or won't do their work?

How's that?

You know, I'm going to assume an MA, because I checked into it a year and a half ago before I got the job I have now, and I have an MFA, but I can't say for certain. There's also some bonuses for working in an underserved field, like English or Math.

Sounds like my boyfriend's policy. He has a student who either hasn't done or hasn't turned in the vast majority of assignments, and is therefore failing the class. He's told the student repeatedly that he needs to do the work in order to pass the class (you'd think this would be common sense, no?). The student happens to be black, and my boyfriend is white, so now the student's mother is calling my boyfriend a racist. Fun times.

Yeah, I'm considering becoming a High School teacher in terms of English or History.

English is underserved there? Wow... that sounds so nice... except the whole having to move to Florida thing though. :p

Part of the joys of being a teacher. I get the evil glare of death when I dare to wake a student up to demand that they put away the book and focus on the class.

Everything is underserved down here, and that's on top the fact that Jeb! refuses to enforce the reduced class size amendment.

And the mother thinks her precious little is actually doing the work?
