I'm curious..

I regularly see people whine about banning pledges, legalizing gay marriage & the like, so I'm wondering; why do you guys think it's a good idea to force others to live like you prefer to live?

Wouldn't everyone be better off if you observed the behaviour you deem proper & others observed whatever behaviour they deem proper? In fact, isn't all this moralism/religion/whatever simply a question of etiquette?

That's exactly what we're aiming at. Let everyone observe the behavior he deems proper. That means you can't enforce inequality on the homos or force the goddess worshipers, polytheists or atheists to pledge allegience under god.

But then how would we keep the ignorant masses in line? We have to let them in on the horrible secrets of the evil liberals, like banning the Bible, burning the flag, smoking marijuana, soliciting sex with Congressional pages (but a Republican did that) (SHUT UP!) and letting men marry men. Anything other than ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN is not a marriage and should be banned, because we need our children to have male AND female role models (what about single parents?) (SHUT UP, DAMNIT!) or else they'll grow up to become gay dog-raping Democrats. And that's why we can't have moral realtivism.

Exactly, and if the Masses figure that out, they might figure out that money does buy happiness, that you can have it all, and that slaving away for a pittance in hopes of a reward in the Next World is crap.

I AM you.Seriously. I'm not gonna say it again. Get my hands outta my pants!

Anyway, I'd very much like to hear from the Proper-Conduct-Crowd. I simply don't grasp why anyone would want to enforce their own social rules on other people (outside their own homes). It seems like too much of a slippery slope to be worth the trouble.

I'm pretty sure most people would be mildly horrified if they were forced by law to burp or fart loudly after dinner, and compared to having to lie through your teeth first thing in the morning for 12 years, or being considered a second class citizen in the eyes of the law, burping/farting seems a laughably minor inconvenience.

So why? What possible good can come from forcing others to conform to your standards?

Sigh... i'm not really you.

Sigh... i'm not really you.Damn. I was kinda hoping to either get into a shouting match or have dirty sex with my other personality... That, or convince it to do the laundry & fetch me another beer.

Are you sure you're not me?

In a Universe of infinite possibility, there is always a chance I am you but I won't do my own laundry let alone yours and I've already finished all the beer in the fridge.

So fucking typical :(

... But at least you didn't come with a Bible.

But back on topic: Where are all you authoritarians?

This is your chance to explain just why I should waste my life being you, instead of me.

I have a paperback of Stephen King's It. The covers ripped and a chunk of chapter 1 is missing. Oh, and that's not blood. It's just jelly.

Wouldn't everyone be better off if you observed the behaviour you deem proper & others observed whatever behaviour they deem proper? That's exactly the problem. Some people deem it proper behaviour to tell other people how to behave properly.
Some people don't agree with that, obviously, and then tell those people that they shouldn't behave like that; which of course is hypocritical because they're then doing it themselves, telling people what (not) to do.

Alright. Since there seems not to be many authoritarians around here, I'll fill in for them.

Maybe some people like the culture the way it is, and don't feel the need to change it, or don't want others to do so? Maybe some people just want to be assholes about their religious opinions?

Now that I think about it, I guess the biggest reason might be that people don't want to live in a world where they are constantly surrounded by things that offend their moral sensibilities. Yes, I suppose they should grow a thicker skin, but then, so should pretty much everyone else.

It's a part of a human nature to try to convert others into thinking the way you think. Liberals do it just as much as the conservatives. Would people be better off without doing it? Hard to tell. People will always hate, dislike or at least avoid others, who have different values. Does this make it alright? Meh.

Good question. I don't think anyone will come up with a satisfactory answer. They'll probably resort to the dogma and call you a green feminazi homo-commie. Wear as a badge of honor.

Personally, I don't care what the hell you do, as long as it doesn't violate the rights of someone else.

Proper Conduct = Harm no one. Do as you damn well please as long as no one is harmed. Is that so difficult?

as far as i'm concerned that's the whole point of being liberal. the only thing you want to stop as a liberal is a conservative agenda in public institutions and bigotry (cuz that's not necessarily a conservative thing).
