Trying to figure something out about what Gromit was growing in the greenhouse. Thought it was a watermelon (and it is called melon twice in the film), but it's also called Marrow. I'd never heard of this until I looked it up and found it was another word for squash (OK...squash is actually another word for marrow).

Yes, I know they are gourds, but a squash is not a watermelon, and that thing didn't have pink meat with little black seeds. I've never seen a melon that looks just like a watermelon on the outside, but has that gooey, light green mess inside.

Yeah...ya know, I've been racking my brain over this so much, I think I missed the simple idea that it's not necessarily going to be 100%. As I stated earlier, I had never even hear of marrow, (other than in bones) and my wife and I were so sure that this...thing... was a watermelon. Plus, when it gets referred to in W&G books/toys, it's capitalized, as if Marrow was it's name-o (sorry, I couldn't resist that).

If anyone else wants to throw in their ideas, please do.

Funny you should mention that....we listened to the commentary track, and it was never mentioned. Although, Nick Park did mention a possible joke of marrow being near a sign that said squash (as a sort-of command). BTW, where did you learn that they changed the line?

I just remember it being mentioned here at the time. I can't remember why; I think people just have a vague interest in British words being changed for American one's, ever since you lot didn't know what a Philosopher was in Harry Potter. :p

changing lines for cultural references is standard. The original title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, however for the US market, it became "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"

and if you really want some fun, check out what some English titles become in Vietnam, China, Korea, and even Japan.
