Halloween, Japanese-style

The Japanese invented cosplay, so I'd expect their Halloween regalia to be equally eccentric. They did not disappoint.

Behold (http://www.cracked.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1209)!

My favorites? The Old Glory bodysuit (http://www.cracked.com/img/articles/hallopan/zensintaitu007.jpg), the effete swan outfit (http://www.cracked.com/img/articles/hallopan/mjp-11-.jpg), and the oddly-endowed monkey (http://www.cracked.com/img/articles/hallopan/046_b.jpg).

*sigh* Maybe next year...

It's never too early for kids to start worrying about the size of their boobies, penis, and balls.

Um, one, Japan doesn't really celebrate Halloween so those aren't Halloween costumes. And two, that oddly endowed monkey is actually a tanuki.

This is Japan, home of the large stone and wodden penises that reside in shrines all over the place and are still reguarly paraded down the middle of the street with people trying to touch and rub them.

And no, I am NOT making that up.

Interesting -- although that doesn't change the fact that it has unusually large genitals. :p

Heh... I was reading the Wikipedia entry for "tanuki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanuki)", and came across this:

Caption: "A Tanuki using its enlarged scrotum to fight off a police officer in the popular anime Pom Poko."

I do not lie.

Well, yes, but tanuki are supposed to. They are well known for it after all.

Um, one, Japan doesn't really celebrate Halloween so those aren't Halloween costumes.

They aren't Halloween costumes, but here in the big city, Halloween has really been catching on. I've spent the last two weekends making a bundle off of a purely Japanese Halloween event in Kobe.

(Although the "facist pigs" at the OPD obliterated Osaka's oldest Halloween tradition, the Loop Line Party, this year.)

And two, that oddly endowed monkey is actually a tanuki.

Indeed it is.

And no, I am NOT making that up.

For example, the Kanamara festival, featured in an MDN Photo Special recently:

Tanuki (aka "Raccoon Dogs" or Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus, and often mistranslated as badger or ) actually have quite large testes.

Tanuki don't usually carry bottles of sake, but the statues are correct about their biology in one important detail: testes size. Rather than being used as an impromptu drum, as Japanese folklore would have it, the scrotum is large because of high levels of competition among males for females. This means that they copulate very frequently -- and need large testes.
http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/tanuki-jt.shtml

A curious and defining characteristic of Tanuki is its gigantic testes. According to some legends, the testicles / scrotum can be stretched to the size of eight tatami mats. Others point to the word Senjojiki (the space of 1,000 tatami mats) as an indication of the Tanuki's testes size. Called Kin-tama (Golden Balls) in Japanese, the testes are supposedly symbols of good luck rather than overt sexual symbols (the Japanese are more tolerant of low humor than most Western nations). In the movie Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko (see below), the Tanuki stretches out its scrotum as a parachute in a desperate suicide attack. In other Tanuki folklore, the Tanuki uses the testes as an impromptu drum, beating out the "ponpoko" sound (no pun intended).

In biological terms, the mythical Tanuki's large "golden balls" are a true depiction of the real-life Tanuki. According to evolutionary biologists, the Tanuki's scrotum is large because of fierce competition among Tanuki males for females. Phrased differently, Tanuki copulate frequently, and those Tanuki with larger testes size have a greater chance of getting their genes into the next generation. The same is true in the world of chimpanzees.

It's starting to, yes. Nagano is home to the largest Halloween party/event in Japan (Happy Halloween in Shiojiri) were we had well over 10,000 attend this year. Sadly I still find myself having to explain the holiday a lot though. :(

*sputter* Why would anybody want to stretch scrotum? Tanuki testicle parachutes? Replace your old carpeting? Revenge for their testis being bigger?

I suggest watching Pom Poko (http://imdb.com/title/tt0110008/).

and you'll see the use of stretching one's scrotum to immense porportions... :D

I saw those statues out the front of buildings, they looked like hedgehogs with enormous knackers. Now I understand what they are. Still pretty odd though! :p
