My Professor is going to be on the Daily Show tonight.

So, from what I've heard, one of my professors, Dr. John Mueller will be on the Daily Sow tonight. He'll be talking about his book "Six Rather Unusual Propositions about Terrorism", and trying to sucker us folk into buying it. (I'm not going to, because I've already had to buy one of his books for class...) But yeah, amusing, no?

Well my cousin's grandfather appeared (in name, he's long dead) on the Simpsons. Beat that!

Gotta love how profs make their own books required reading for their courses.

i was disappointed last night when the guest was a basketball player.

maybe y'all dont have alot of celebrities in ohio and maybe this guy is incredibly famous, i wouldnt know, but i was expecting something a bit more topical on a show one week before the midterm elections.

I want to see Mark Foley on there. With an audience full of cub scouts.

It makes sense that they would Cluichstan!

After all, the reason they wrote the book in the first place is because they think that no existing book covered <some thing or other> in a very good way. So they write an EXCELLENT book on the subject(cough), and make it available for students to get the most up to date and personalized work possible, dealing exactly with what they need to know! :p

btw, very cool Andaluciae. Doubt I'll be around tonight to watch the show, but still quite cool :D

And force their students to line their pockets with cash from book sales.

Well, sure, I mean, they put in a lot of work on it and it ain't like there's a huge profit in text books. :D And what better market than a captive one? If I were a prof and had books out there, you'd be buying them all.

Yeah, cuz profs don't make enough for their three hours or so of actual teaching each week...

They don't. And it's not just teaching and putting up with slacker students, they have to suck up to the department head, schmooze the Dean's wife, spend time playing departmental politics ... :p

Three hours even when working as an adjunct I teach for 3 hours a day minumum and 4 or 5 hours of prep time a day at least. And I am light compared to others around here.

Edit: When I was teaching a full class load I moved back into tech support mostly now

Then you've drawn a bad deal. The profs at my uni barely worked at all with students. Their priority was getting themselves published.

I have been to two or three collages … never that way around here even with the published professors … The U of M Duluth was the closest to what you describe but they still had class more then three hours a week

That would be the least they could ever have is 3 hours a week if they only taught 1 class (which is 3 hours a week exactly)

How much money is your univ throwing away … I have never been at a university where they taught less then three classes a day

They were throwing away quite a lot, although not as much as yours seems to be (see the bolded bits above).

One of my Professors did that last year.

Mainly because what he'd written was for Parliament...a history of Parliament in the 17th and 18th century and the political and social changes of the time. Now part of Parliament's official history, I think, and in the Parliamentary library.

And he was lecturing on the very subject he'd written for Parliament on. In fact, I'm pretty certain why my uni hired him a few years ago.

So it made sense to have his book as required reading...seeing as it was the authoritative book on the subject.

Yes because my sometimes crappy ability to spell disallows me to instruct on advanced network security, firewall security, and high speed network design

Hell our department rewrote the text for our operating systems course to offer to students, not only did they have more knowledge then the collection of texts we were using before, the students were also able to buy one AT COST book (printed locally) rather then 4 different OS books

Actually, the inability to spell and use good grammar are primary pre-requisites for such a position. Are you fluent in '1337?

(hehe .... messin' with ya UT ;) )

I got that shit down :) j/k I think I was at the wrong time for that phase … too young for the initial uprising of that crap and too old for the reincarnation by teens.

Heh ... I was around for the initial uprising of it. I fought against it tooth and nail. Ran a couple of BBS's around Houston from which you'd get banned if you used that crap in my forums.

Alas, one cannot contain the beast forever and it is now permanently etched on the very fabric of society. I fear for the children.

Of the 30 textbooks on my bookshelf I can immediately survey, exactly 3 were written by any of my professors. And those three are probably the least expensive of them all. And the only people getting their pockets lined with cash are the publishers, not professors (who are getting works published in order to get recognized, which in turn helps secure financial and other support for their research; instructing students is only part of their job, after all). If there was any money in academics, the vast majority of people would probably stay in academics, instead of going out and getting jobs elsewhere.

(edit: Now my computer programming instructors at the local community college were in the habit of requiring their own textbooks for class. Not only was there no research being supported , but those books also tended to be shrinkwrapped, and thus "NOT RETURNABLE" at the campus bookstore. In [i]that case, your assessment is probably highly accurate.)

(edit again: But even so, regardless of who wrote the books, I'm still required to buy it, so I'm still required to "line someone's pockets" regardless of who the author is. Whether it's my own professor, or a professor somewhere else, what difference does it make so long as the author knows what he or she is talking about and I'm learning what I need to learn?)
