Well on the subject...

Someone was talking about Johnny Depp, and I said "Man, hes not cool was does everyone like him?" and the guy talking about Depp said... "You're just saying that to be different."

This got me thinking, why do we (as "society") care about movie stars? Musicians are understandable, music is something that speaks to us, so are politicians, I mean they run our lives for Xs sake.

But movie stars? All we see for so many popular ones are things like date movies that are utter b*llshit and actually have no relations to real life.

I like actors because they're people. They do their job well.

I was under the impression that Equilibrium was depressing, and distinctly not steamy. Unlike 1984.

johnny depp is arguably the best actor of his generation. he is certainly in the top 10 of any thoughtful list.

and, if you bother to notice, johnny depp is famous FOR his acting, not for any tabloid antics. he keeps a low publicity profile.

we pay attention to the lives of celebrities for various reason. i suppose the biggest reason is that people love to gossip and movie stars are known by everyone so its easier to talk to others about them. (as opposed to your neighbor who is cheating on his wife with the local slut. its not as interesting if you dont have a clue who he is)

most of the rest of it is the movie publicity machine. keeping an actor in the public eye makes their movies more profitable and lets them demand more money per movie.

Equilibrium was depressing because of how much it sucked. Seriously. I fucking hate that movie. It's the only movie with Christian Bale that I haven't liked, and I fucking hate it. I don't just HATE it, I FUCKING hate it.

I care, because after sitting through Stay, i've finally decided to never see another movie featuring Ewan MacGregor. Every movie featuring him either sucks outright, or would be improved without him (Trainspotting being the only exception that comes to mind).
