Thinking about getting a PSP...

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about them? I'm really thinking about buying one, but I've heard they don't have an wide library of good games. I'll admit--a big thing pushing me towards it is so that I can finally play Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, as I'm a huge fan of the series. Any thoughts?

Syphon Filter, Dark Mirror?
I have never heard of that.
I have the first 3, as such i never got the fourth which i could have purchased around the time of my birthday last year but didn't.
The screw* is tiny and there is no point in watching movies on it.
However it is a good way to waste time on the train or at work.

EDIT:*I meant Screen

Yep, Dark Mirror takes place after Omega Strain and is supposed to be one of the better PSP games out there. DM, apparently, has a damn good plot, too.

Is it on the PS2?

Some of the sports games are ok.
But i'd say most of the games worth playing on it are novelty games like Sudoku or Bomb(Squad) V8 Super Cars is alright.

Nope, unfortunately SCEA won't port it over to PS2, which irks me a lot. Hence, a primary reason for me to shell out money for a PSP (that, and SOCOM: Fire Team Bravo looked decent).

However, this game apparently leaves room for a sequel, so I'm crossing my fingers that they're dreaming up a plot for a PS3 Syphon Filter.

Not on PS2?
I won't be getting a PS3 for 2 years or so, they cost too much and i can still enjoy my PSX and PS2, plus i'd be better off getting my own computer .http://209.85.12.227/html/emoticons/sleep.gif

I'll have to check around for Syphon Filter 4.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest picking up Omega Strain. It's dirt cheap now; I see it everywhere for under $20, usually at $10. Most people don't seem to think fondly of it; I like it, though. Only bad thing is that John Chacon isn't the voice of Gabe. :(

It pisses me off that DM isn't on the PS2. And I don't know about the PS3, either. I'm not sure if I'll be able to find one, let one afford one.

Yeah it would probably be about $40 here.
Maybe it is too hot to handle for the PS2?
it'd have to be pretty kick arse.
Surely it would be on PS3 if it is going to be on the PSP.

EDIT:*I meant Screenthe screen is great, I've seen movies played on them and I can actually read the subtitles on em.

Mainly because it's kinda clunky. but then size of the unit was my argument against the Gameboy Advanced SP... :p

I have a PSP.

I don't regret it, however I am still very much ticked that there are no good RPG's for it. Supposedly, the golden age of PSP gaming is yet to come.

The recent release of Ace Combat X has made me love my PSP again :D

And with future titles like Killzone: Liberation, Call of Duty (3??), Metal Gear: Portable Ops, and the future release of Sony's PS1 emulator, the future looks bright.

well, it's rather large, not as big as the Lynx but still rather sizable. larger than the DS I believe... (lengthwise, not width.)

Yeah it is crisp but it is so tiny.

My observations of the PSP are generally not positive.

It has awesome graphics for a handheld. However...

-The battery life is atrocious.
-Optical media plus a handheld device where you will conceivably be changing media a lot and storing it on the move is just asking for trouble.
-The load times are pretty painful
-The convergence features like music and movies are pointless and badly executed. The money you have to shell out to make them work reasonably is ridiculous (especially when you consider how much you just paid for the basic device) and even then, it doesn't do them as effectively as separate devices will.
-It's cumbersome to hold and use

So yeah, those are the factors that went into my rejecting the PSP when I was in the market for a handheld gaming system.

i'd get a Nintendo DS, largely because it has the new mario bros game on it, and mario kart, and many other cool things that the PSP doesn't :)
edit: in fact i *want* to get a DS, but kinda can't afford it after shelling out for a new laptop and an xbox360

DS lite definately, but it is only longer than the DS original/phat/OMG it will crush us all by a few millimetres (more or less, my comparison wasn't very scientific)

My experience with the PSP over the past year has been:

-the games tend to be shit and not worth buying unless you travel allot
-people tend to be impressed by it
-the 1 gig memory is essential
-the PSP headphones lack the volume to be used near a roads (mostly because there “ear friendly”) so you will need new headphones
-if your anything like me it will end up as a music player (which is fairly good considering IPod’s are terrible)
-its fairly durable
-the remote lead is a waste of money
-don’t bother putting the PSP in its mitten or buying the protective case you will need neither
-keep a game in the PSP at all times
-UMD movies are dead as the dodo
-its size makes it fairly impractical to carry around unless you actually need it
-the PSP’s built in speakers are crap
-you can store substances by taking out the battery/placing the substances in bags and putting in the UMD drive (the PSP never gets searched by Technophobic policemen whop can’t afford to break a PSP)

All in all depends what you want it for

I dunno, the PSP is more versatile, but I know my roommate has both a PSP and a DS, and he plays the DS, whilst the PSP sits there and rots. It hasn't even been charged for ages.

For should the enemy strengthen his van, he will weaken his rear; should he strengthen his rear, he will weaken his van; should he strengthen his left, he will weaken his right; should he strengthen his right, he will weaken his left. If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak.

Jack of all trades, master of none.
