NSG Banal?

Curious Inquiry

Have I changed or has NSG? I used to be able to spend a couple hours at least lurking, sometimes many more engaged in witty banter. Now, I rarely bother to open the threads. :(

I supose like anything NSG has its highs and its lows, and also you need to be in the right frame of mind for it, sometimes you just don't feel like it or nothing seems to jump out at you.

It's been going downhill, IMO, for about a year now. Used to be such fun...great social and random-stuff threads mixed with some light-hearted discussion and some serious debate.

Seems now that we've dropped the 'fun' threads and the serious debate, and we've ended up with a morass of light-hearted discussion.

Well, I WAS here last year (as Victonia, but I just never posted) and I can agree with you. Nowadays, it's only political discussions.

Yeah, I wondered about that...it seems all of the RP threads have died out. It's a shame too, since they attracted people to the board and gave them a place to chill between debates.

Stop being lame. Complaining about NSG not being the same is as old as NSG itself. Most of you in this thread have been here for less than a year and look at you whining like insufferable fossils.
People come and go, trends come and go, your own level of patience and mood change. But NSG is more or less the same as it was 2 years ago when I got here, and if you don't like it, either come up with a great thread, make some new friends, liven up the board with your brilliance, or otherwise, you'd only be the millionth person to leave.

I'll be as lame as I like thank you all the same.
Complaining about NSG not being the same is as old as NSG itself.
Right, so probably then about as old as complaining about people complaining about NSG not being same....guess that makes us all traditionalists.

Most of you in this thread have been here for less than a year and look at you whining like insufferable fossils.
Or at least have been here posting with the particular nation they posted in this thread....other nations they may have posted with however.....

People come and go, trends come and go, your own level of patience and mood change.
Wow, such revelation, maybe you should become a prophit Mr Holier Than Thou....

But NSG is more or less the same as it was 2 years ago when I got here,
Ahh, finally the point of your post "look everyone 2 whole years"...."oh we bow to your awesomeness of awesome one"....

and if you don't like it, either come up with a great thread, make some new friends, liven up the board with your brilliance, or otherwise, you'd only be the millionth person to leave.
How about if you dont like someone else's thread you mind your own business....so far as I can tell people have every right to complain that 'it's not the same', if you join them or repremand them, then you're on a level with them, so give up the holier than thou crap, it stopped being true (if it ever was) the moment you posted your 'you are all teh suxor lamers, I been here longer than you all nah nah nah' bollocks.

(And yes I certainly am as lame as anyone else in this thread, the thread is in NSG, it goes without saying that anyone in a position to read or post on it is an NSG forum member....in other words lame as....)

Well, the fun threads seem to either die out within minutes or get shunted to spam right away. The political discussions almost always wind up with someone calling someone on the other side of the discussion a troll. As an example, I got called a troll because I pointed out that the person I was conversing with didn't defend his point wth evidence, but only repeated the claim. (linky 1 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11864447&postcount=154) and linky 2 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11864452&postcount=155)) So, I give up the political discussions. It's one thing to be called a troll when I know I'm not, but it gets annoying after a while to see it thrown around as a weapon to end debate without discussion.

All that seems to remain is mid-level fluff.

It's probably a bit of both. NSG is sometimes terribly banal, and sometimes it's great and we're just not in the mood for it.

As far as things changing, well some things have actually changed about the forum over the years, but for the most part it's the same old crap being produced under different names and sometimes even by different people.

General has its ups and downs... It's just that it's a bit down right now. It'll probably pass.

But I'm wondering: What were the really great threads? Has it been so long since they were around that they could be repeated / reproduced? (And I'm not talking about grave-digging, but trying again :) )

And does anybody have a good idea for a fun thread? Or a mediocre one, that might need a bit of tweeking to be perfect? Anyone? Ideas? Here?

What makes a good thread a good thread?

What makes a good thread a good thread?

Depends on what you're looking for, and perhaps what kind of mood you're in.

If I'm in a contemplative mood, threads dealing with epistemology, ethics, political theory, or the applicability of certain legal principles are generally best.

If I'm in a carefree mood, discussions about great foods and how to cook them, what kind of drinks are preferred, and other personal preferences are ideal.

Hey, I resent that! :p

I like threads that make me think about (and question) my beliefs & why I hold them, but I usually find that by the time I get to them, they've degenrated into 20+ page flame fests. I gets quite frustrating sometimes.

I also like the humourous ones too.
