Timeless Video Games

What computer/video games out there are likely to be timeless? Not games franchises that will keep going on. Specific games. I'll give a few examples:

Starcraft: Starcraft was made years ago, and tons of people still play it - including, if reports are accurate, 1/3 of the South Korean population. I just reinstalled it on my computer. Starcraft is timeless.

The Worms Games: OK, so this IS a franchise. Still, to me, it doesn't really matter which version I'm playing. I love this game.

Oh, and none of the 'arcade' games, or MMORPGs. MMORPGs are designed to last.

The Metroid series. I just finished playing Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion. Currently playing the original Metroid, and I'll eventually start playing Super Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus (again!).

Samus Aran... I heart thee!

The early RPGs are timeless. Wizardry. Ultima IV. (and V, though VII is showing its age).

The Metroid series. The Mario Bros. series. The Legend of Zelda series. The Mega Man series. Kid Icarus. Ghosts 'n' Goblins / Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. Space Invaders. Tetris.

There are more, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Final Fantasy, both as a series and any game in the (main) series or FF:Tactics.
Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time also.
Chrono Trigger, maybe Chrono Cross too.
That's all I can think of right now.
EDIT:Ooh, almost forgot Zero Wing.
Or in other words, that game "all your base are belong to us" comes from.

There are oodles...

Solitaire -- It's on almost every computer...
Minesweeper -- ditto
SimCity 2000 -- still used as an educational tool at my old high school
Halo -- despite what some people say, this game never gets old
Civilization II -- Still an excellent game, even better than its sequels
Worms -- gotta agree with you there...
Katamari Damacy -- If you haven't played it, you should

I said no MMOs. And I will name nearly every game in the C&C series (at least all the ones I've played) as potentially timeless.

Ace Combat II had one of the best soundtracks ever. I still love that game, even if it is dated.

Total Annihilation is awesome. So is X-Com, Master of Orion 2, and Age of Wonders.

There are way to many for me to recall, actually.

Civilization tops my list, but that is more along the lines of a franchise though, but I suppose all really good games are.
So I will lump in Command and Conquer as well (I prefer red alert 2)
Worms – truly unique
Doom (of course)
Masters of Orion
Starcraft (though I feel I must pay homage to Warcraft to say it)
X-Com
Ultima (must name the series, sorry)
Scorched earth (bored middle school students who get tired of playing crappy things like Oregon Trail will keep SE alive forever, though it sometimes gets a bit of a facelift).
Pirates! (an old favorite – even like the newest remake)
Darklands (my very first actual purchase).

However this is a very difficult thing to name because there are a couple of other games that I will always fondly remember but nobody else seems to like them as much. So how about throwing in a little tag-along note of some game you wish were timeless because they just don’t make them like they used to?

I would put Star Control 2 in the running but its very limited replayability killed its chance of being timeless. Loved that game.

Shit, I forgot Oregon Trail and Worms.

I saw a game at Gmaestop, it had something to do with pirates, looked piratey.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is my number one favorite PC game. I'd have to say I also like the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series on the Playstation since they were both landmark platformers (my favorite PS/PS2 genre). The same goes with the Jak&Daxter/Ratchet&Clank series.

Day of the Tentacle and Age of Empires 2 (the first one too, but the second was several levels better still).

I still play AoE2 against my dad sometimes. And DoT whenever I feel bored.

I managed to play both Civ II and Civ IV, and I'll say very clearly that Civ IV is the best in the series. And not by any small margin, either.

The SimCity franchise is still going strong - but even Will Wright might disown it soon. Getting too complex for gamers in this day and age.

Too complex? Thing isn't anywhere NEAR complex enough yet. For one thing, they need a serious boost to the ability to make money to compensate for services. Real cities have a huge number of alternatives not seen even in Sim City IV.

There's that too. Also, technology is essentially stagnant. Sure, a few options like fusion become available, but apart from those, there's no advancement. The years mean nothing except in how they affect changes in services.
