Usually around this time everyone's excited over what they chose to dress as this year... anyone come up with anything particularly creative/exciting? Pictures, descriptions? "I'm too old to dress up"s?

If you're a guy, make sure you don't shave for at least a week before Halloween. On the night of the holiday, wear a short skirt, a bra, pantyhose, high heels (the kind with thick soles), and dye your hair candy apple green. Oh, and make sure to wear black lipstick, make up your face in the classic "whore" fashion, and wear a lot of different colognes mixed together.

Yes.

You basically dip an apple in a pot of hot caramel to make a caramel apple. The same applies when you're making a candy apple. Popular colors for candy apples are red and green (and the green color is really quite ugly).

As to the OP, I'm not dressing up this year. My friends and I ended up not doing anything for Halloween, and I don't have any costumes (either bought or made from my wardrobe) that are workplace appropriate.

Nah, black lipstick would definitely increase the effect. It's more garish than ruby red, when combined with the other colors... Especially the white face powder.

Last time I actually went trick-or-treating, I had a costume that was the embodiment of sheer terror.

To make it, you first need a suit and tie. Put on the suit and tie.
Then get a briefcase or other bag (which will double as a candy storage). Put a piece of paper on it that says "[your last name] Legal Associates".

You are now a lawyer.

I was an emo/goth kid for a party Saturday night and I may wander around campus tomorrow dressed as Jesus. If I'm late for class, I can just sit down and be like, "It's okay--I'm Jesus." Sit up at the end of class and tell someone taking my chair, "This seat is blessed." Perhaps spout a "Dad damnit!" from time to time. Could be good fun, if I'm abitious enough to do it.

English Halloween is abysmal. Irritating screaming children deluding themselves that everyone else is enjoying it as much as they are, degenerate chavs throwing eggs to assert their masculinity, and an obligation to be unreasonably cheerful.

I might further deplore the dearth of any original costumes, party themes, or policing to preclude the little degenerates behaviour.

I took a sheet, cut two holes in it and drew a mouth on it.

Underneath, I wore a plain white tshirt with 'If you can read this, someone has stolen my crappy ghost costume' written on the back. I wore it to a huge halloween party, and after about 10 minutes I got sick of the ghost thing and started walking around with a black vivid getting anyone I could to write or draw whatever they liked on it. There were a lot of penises drawn..

Not to sound creepy or anything, but you are far to attractive to be on an internet forum that regularily discusses politics, and also has fanfiction wars between nations that have never existed.

ZOMG!!11!!!11!ONE!!!1 its teh gurl!

Kidding of course.

I just wore a kilt and sash I made a year back for a high school pageant(It was a fund raiser durn it!), had a nice button up white shirt, with the top two unbuttoned to show off my Scottish(Yay Hairy heritage, I'm italian as well!) chest pelt, and carried around a golf club, talking in a heavy scottish accent calling everyone lads and lasses.

Was thinking about going as Blanka from Street Fighter II, dying my head hair and chest hair orange, and painting myself green, but I'm rather self conscious about not having a shirt on.

I'll put up some pics in a bit, but this years best costume (due to work & different parties, I did several) was the zombie hockey player. After work, while standing on the train platform, a station attendant brought me a first aid kit not realising it was a costume.

are candy apples the same as toffee apples? cuz i thought they were brown.
You basically dip an apple in a pot of hot caramel to make a caramel apple. The same applies when you're making a candy apple. Popular colors for candy apples are red and green (and the green color is really quite ugly).

Nope those are camel apples. Candy apples are dipped in syrup heated to the "hard crack" stage. That's the stage before the sucrose molocules break down and carmelize.

Hard crack candy is usually clear and hard, basically lollipops and what I grew up calling hard candies. For candy apples, it's usually dyed red and may have cinnamon added.

Carmel is brown and soft.

5. Hard-Crack Stage
300° F–310° F
Sugar concentration: 99%

The hard-crack stage is the highest temperature you are likely to see specified in a candy recipe. At these temperatures, there is almost no water left in the syrup. Drop a little of the molten syrup in cold water and it will form hard, brittle threads that break when bent. CAUTION: To avoid burns, allow the syrup to cool in the cold water for a few moments before touching it!

Toffee, nut brittles, and lollipops are all cooked to the hard-crack stage.

Caramelizing Sugar

If you heat a sugar syrup to temperatures higher than any of the candy stages, you will be on your way to creating caramelized sugar (the brown liquid stage)—a rich addition to many desserts.

Clear-Liquid Stage
320° F
sugar concentration: 100%

At this temperature all the water has boiled away. The remaining sugar is liquid and light amber in color.

Brown-Liquid Stage
338° F
sugar concentration: 100%

Now the liquefied sugar turns brown in color due to carmelization. The sugar is beginning to break down and form many complex compounds that contribute to a richer flavor.

Caramelized sugar is used for dessert decorations and can also be used to give a candy coating to nuts.

bah, it's been done

Far too often.

Yeah, the character generation is really the best part of that game. After that, it goes straight downhill. I'd been playing MUDs since the mid-'90s, and it was pretty cool to see your character moving around. But you're right. That wore off pretty damn quickly.
