Subliminal Messages

My friend suggested earlier today that everyone press the mute button when the political commercials came on. I started thinking about doing that and then started thinking about subliminal messages.
What would happen if you played the ads backward or changed the speed of the audio? Or if you paused it at the right time?
I'm thinking that there should be a federal law that on all political ads, there must be some sort of subliminal message that reads "I AM A BIG FAT ATTENTION WHORE".

I was talking to Simonist through IM one day and she sent me this link, it freaked me out. Anyway, it was about the same time as my "whatcha sound like?" thread and so I started listening to the recordings of fellow Generalites backwards.....crazy stuff.

Ok after reading this the further thought occured that flash cartoons like homestarrunner and albino black sheep, ect use them :( *gulp*
Then the further thought occurred that this could be in a some things we take for granted! :eek: *clutches foil hat* Is there any way to prevent ourselves from being brainwashed by these subliminal messages?!

yep. don't watch anything, don't read anything, and don't listen to anything... especially Music!
don't go on the internet, don't play any games, and to be safe, don't eat any foods that you did not raise and harvest yourself!

That's a good idea, but not because of subliminal messages.

Thing about backwards messages is, the brain doesn't hear them. Peoples minds are not trained to listen to and recognize reverse speech, consciously or subconsciously. So that would be pointless.

They don't need a subliminal message for that, the message is perfectly clear with their big-ass grins and their oily words. :)
I doubt that political ads have subliminal messages in them. I thought the government deemed subliminal advertising illegal?
But, propaganda graces every political ad there is.

Bush showed words (and parts thereof) scaling from the foreground to the background on a television screen. When the word BUREAUCRATS flashed on the screen, one frame showed only the last part, RATS. Democrats promptly asked the FCC to look into the matter, but no penalties were ever assessed in the case. The effect this had on the overall presidential race was unclear. The Democrats and Al Gore received ridicule for finding malicious intent in something that could have been a simple mistake.

I posted about reverse speech in my own thread, but everyone said it was fake.
I think it has a lot to do with your own subconcious what you think you hear. I doubt that it's ever going to be science, it's just too unreliable, it can't be tested.
