All in the Christmas spirit, I guess...

As the title of the article says, this is quite possibly one of the worst things ever. They don't have to wait 'till December to film their little p.r. stunt! I mean, it's not like winter in sub-Saharan Africa is visibly different from late summer...

Bastards.

Well, still I wonder what the amputees think. If they had a good time, (because it gave them something to do) and they made a little money, then no harm, no foul.

Funny story, but... they haven't paid them yet, either. Don't worry, they're working on it, but... you know, publicity and all...

Who cares what the motivation behind it is...the fact of the matter is 27 people will be getting prosthetics who otherwise could not. Is it surprising that something is motivated by profits?

That can't be good. I would think that they will be paid though. Would be hard to sell movie tickets if word got out of unpaid paticipants. Especially, handicaped participants.

Did you not read the article? The studio is holding off on the delivery of the prosthetics until December so that they can treat it like a p.r. stunt. Disgusting.

Yea! That is pretty messed up right there. Yea! Fuck WB!
Wish I liked Leonardo DiCaprio movies to begin with so I could cross this one off the list. But I am finished with WB. Piss on em'!!!

Between the choice of not getting a prosthetic and having to wait a whole month or two to get one, I'll take the month or two wait.

and WB isn't treating it like a publicity stunt. It IS a publicity stunt. That simple. And my point remains: so what? These people still get the prosthetics they need. It is no different than giving to charity and getting a tax break.

Interesting point. But I doubt your choice of words will be used by the producers to explain themselves when they appear on Oprah and Letterman and such, when the movie is near it's release date. I wonder what they will say.
Not bad

I tried to read the article. Their link claiming it is an IMDB article does not go to any IMDB article about this alleged occurrance.

I wonder what they will say.Who cares what they call it? The fact of the matter is that people who need help are getting it, and it doesn't hurt anyone for WB to wait a few months and profit off of it.

Who? I think the fans will care. I mean, sometimes the boss can't pay you this week but will get you your money. But witholding medical treatment that someone has earned to try to make a publicity stunt more effective is just...it's just...."cruel and unusual" comes to mind!

The medical treatment is payment for the services the handicapped provided. If the moviecompagnie views the promotioncampaign as part of the services they are quite right.
Of course, if they did not tell the handicapped about this little detail beforehand they are probably in breach of contract. You cannot just add to the price after you sold.

Actually, the article doesn't say much, and there is no article related in the IMDB link. It isn't hard to think that the original contract may have said that they would have to wait untill December.

This also isn't exactly life or death. They won't die if they go another two months without a leg or an arm. We aren't talking a liver transplant here.

I've had to wait up to three months to get paid from a production company. And neither of us got any publicity off of it.

That's a surprisingly callous thing for the WB guy to say publicly. I'd like something other than this reference to an article that hasn't been found. It really should be no surprise that they are trying to get some publicity out of something like this. Given the choice between giving some people who don't have access prosthetic limbs or blow jobs for all the movie reviewers at the junket, this really seems like the better choice.

It's not outside the realm of believability that someone would try to time the arrival of the limbs and such to coincide with the release of the film. That's very believable. It's bad form to say it, but makes sense otherwise. This doesn't make this a huge outrage, just a kind of tacky, poor execution. Ultimately it won't matter that much, even if this story is true it will blow over and not be as big as the story of them giving the prosthetics out when the movie is released.

It seems that there is a happy ending (http://www.usmagazine.com/node/3074) after all.

The extras in the film have already recieved their artificial limbs, thanks to Eastern Cape (a charity organization) that came to the rescue when they heard of unfulfilled promises.

Eastern Cape says that if WB does finally come through with the money, it will go to 27 other deserving amputees.

Because they didn't give the prosthetics or because they delayed it? If it's because of the delay, then it's really a minor matter. If they don't reimburse the charity, then yeah.

I'll be boycotting it, nothing to do with the amputees it just has Leonardo Di Caprio in it.

If it had Tom Hanks & Tom Cruise in it too, I'd be destroying copies of the film, not merely boycotting it. :p

In lieu of seeing the film, I am going to find the Eastern Cape charity organization (via google-fu) and send them the price of 2 tickets, 2 popcorns, 2 candies and 2 cokes. It would be cool if everyone did that.

OR- I would concider seeing the film if WB donated every nickel of profit from the film to Eastern Cape (the best way for them to save face at this point IMHO)
