Brazil.

It's like they stuck an A/V cable into Terry Gilliam's head and recorded what goes on in there.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/

It can only be described as the comedy version of 1984.

saving private ryan...i love the scene where he is(ryan)crying like a bitch, and everyone is getting mowed down around him...and hanks character tells him to earn it!

pulp fiction is another of my faves...i like samuel jacksons character, especially when he is being robbed in the diner.

and lest i forget..our families christmas movie...scarface...the abuse of language in that movie has no equal..i'm talking about the way tony and his cronies abuse the shit out of english...spectacular!

anything by monty python is well worth watching as well

Oh man!!! Just about every line Jackson had in Pulp Fiction is classic:
...The Weak, the shepherd and the tyrany of all men speech
...They speak English in What?
...Royale with cheese
...I used the same kind of towel as you did, and when I was done, it didn't look like no godamm maxi-pad.
... I'm just going to walk the Earth...You Know, like Cain in Kung-Fu.

Well, it's a long list! Isn't it? :D

You could try the smaller indie fare -- Intermission (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332658/) is an awesome movie, but I think I'm one of maybe four people in the United States who has seen it. :)

Oohhh, finally a good topic!

My contribution:

Lord of War, fucking fantastic.
Adaptation, likewise and Cage does his best two characters.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in case you havn't got around to seeing it just yet.
Saw was just brilliant, Saw 2 not so.

There is, of course, hundreds of great movies, but these deserve special mention.

Enjoy.

If you would like dark humor and sci-fi, you could check out Delicatessen. It is a movie set in a world of bombed out buildings where meat has become so scarce that people have to resort to get unwitting victims to come live in their building until they are fattened up enough. An ex-clown comes to the building after seeing a job advertisement for a handyman, but the butcher's daughter falls in love with him and she tries to save him.

Not really movie, but check out "Yes, Minister" or "Yes, Prime Minister" series. I have watched those DVDs over and over again and never get sick of them. It is great classic British humor. The show was so realistic to the world of politics that Thatcher, the PM of the time, was a big fan and even wrote and appeared in a sketch with the cast.

Watched that last night. Very cool, if a little bizarre.

I think it is the best "action" movie with vampires and werebeasts around.
The "baddie" using videogames to plan his moves, the moral issues about the difference between "goodies" and "baddies", some of the best "gothic" ever seen in a movie (if we can call russian and byzantine imaginery "gothic")...

And I'm waiting for its sequel, "Day watch", not yet released here.

See if you can find any of Park Chan-Wook's vengeance trilogy, preferably either Oldboy or Lady Vengeance. They are fucking masterpieces. And some of the blackest humour you'll see this year.

I'd have two unusual picks: Silent Running, an excellent '70s ecological sci-fi movie, and Memento - which is very strange, but very good once you get the hang of what's going on.

Anything by Alfred Hitchcock, especially Psycho, North by Northwest, and my all time fave, Rear Window.

Anything by Akira Kurosawa, especially Ran (version of King Lear), Throne of Blood (version of Macbeth), Hidden Fortress (origin of Star Wars story line). Also, Stray Dog, early post-war movie.

Film Noir: Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, DOA (the original).

Gritty 70s Realism: Bullit, The Seven Ups, Dog Day Afternoon, The Taking of Pelham 123.

Any three Godzilla movies.

I'm assuming you might get three older movies for your $5.

Wow, Silent Running. I haven't seen that in years, but back in the day, it was on tv, like, 8 times a month. I watched it again and again. Hm, memories...

Gee, here I was going to list some movies that will completely mess with your mind, and people go and steal my thunder...

If you don't mind being driven temporarily insane and have the resources to get both, I recommend watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Memento, in that order.

If you can only watch one, get Memento.

If you can't afford having your mind completely screwed over... well, there's always Stargate, Monty Python, and Pirates of the Caribbean...

Seconded. I'd recommend the original, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and either the 1985 remake or Terror of Mechagodzilla. I'd also recommend Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, but you have to see the previous two movies, or at least know what went on in them, to get the full impact.

Ah, Godzilla movies! The original is best if you can get a version without the Raymond Burr scenes (they were added only for the US market).
