Donnie Darko

Since tomorrow is October 30th (which is coincientally my B-Day:D ) I thought we should have a Donnie Darko discussion since the events of that film end up revolving around that day.

What are your thoughts on this cult classic?

I think it is over rated and hugely pretentious.

Some kid sees a bunny that tells him the worlds gonna end, so he kills himself.

The soundtrack on the original version is quite good, but they destroyed it on the director's cut. The film itself is so-so.

Fantastic movie!

Some kid sees a bunny that tells him the worlds gonna end, so he kills himself.

Well, if you put things in a simplistic and insincere enough way, you can make any movie sound bad.

Like Star Wars Episode IV: Some kid gets a new toy, so he engages in terrorism.

or

Schindler's List: Buncha Jews.

Closer to a kid doesn't stop himself being killed because he knows that if he lives his girlfriend (who he hasn't even met at the time) will die.

THat's a poor summary of the film.

Basically a teen who has had some mental issues awakes one morning on a golf course. He had a history of sleep walking. When he arrives home, he sees that a jet engine had fallen off of an aircraft and crashed through his room. He had been saved by a being known as Frank, which appears to him as a human in a demented bunny halloween costume.

This being appears to him and tells him to do stuff like break flood his Catholic School and burn down the house of a pedophiliac pyscho who was a motivational speaker at his school. I don't want to give away too much because it ruins the movie.

THis movie has become a cult classic in recent years. The summary may seem lame, but when you see the movie, you will be in shock.

It's a great movie but I loathe the end.

And I'm in no mood for watching it right now.

His sister's boyfriend will also survive then as will his entire family (they would've been killed had he not stopped the events of the 2nd from occuring.)

"Donnie Darko" is an interesting film because of its focus on aspects of time travel and mysticism. I also like the fact that the movie strips down the facade of civility put forward by several of its main characters.

It has a really good soundtrack, too.

All in all, it's certainly worth a watch. Don't trouble yourself to try and figure the movie out----it's virtually impossible (LOL.)

The best way to approach this movie is without ever having heard of it.

At least that's what I did, I just found it on the TV one afternoon.

Well it is possible to interpret this if you look at the 28 days as being a parallel/tangent universe.

Meh, all of my friends(whom I hated) forced me to watch it one weekend, I was generally disinterested and walked out about 4/5 way through the movie I never saw the human frank get killed. Having read the synopsis on wikipedia, it looks much better.

I've seen them on there for cheap prices. I considered it for Halloween. I can think of worse costumes. (A friend of mine showed up to my fraternity's Halloween party as Steve Irwin with a bloody shirt and stingray.)

I love the movie... The soundtrack is very good, and incorporated in the movie in a fantastic manner. :)

Anyhoo, the Directors Cut sucks. It overexplains the movie, and the movie is supposed to be open to interpretation. I'm mad that I bought it on DVD without having seen that version.

So kids, if you haven't seen it:
See the theatrical version!

I liked it quite a bit, although the details of it are quite fuzzy in my mind.

SPOILERS

The way I remember it, the end was in the beginning? Part of the plane at the film's end went through a wormhole to a couple of weeks in the past and landed on Donnie's house? And the guy in the rabbit suit was there to protect his own life from being taken in the future? I dunno...the whole movie was just kinda WTF to me.

The summary may seem lame, but when you see the movie, you will be in shock.

In shock that you've wasted two hours, in shock that you've wasted the cost of renting, and in extreme shock that anyone could enjoy or recommend this very lousy, very adolescent movie.

It was an ok movie. I think it was too popular to be considered "cult".

Here is what I consider to be decent cult movies:

Clerks (The first one, the non-shitty one)
Repo Man
Resevoir Dogs (maybe too popular for cult status)
Chinatown (ok, maybe not cult, but old and excellent)
Waking Life
Taxi Driver (again, maybe too popular)
The Conversation
Being John Malkovich
Pi
Memento (definitely too popular, but good)
