What's Your IQ?

So I took an IQ test because I read the how do people get stupid thread.

I was pleased with the result: 131

How about the rest of you?

I did an on-line test about a year ago & got a result of 142. I don't think that's accurate, seems pretty high to me.

IQ threads on NS are always the most farcical pieces of shit ever. Besides the issues with the IQ system itself, there is so much bullshit out there.

Hell, if I take the right 'IQ' test, I'm in the top 1%...

My IQ tends to go up or down depending on the test I take. Last time it was 132. I don't really think these things are accurate, though.

That's the thing about IQ it really doesn't give you much of an edge if you aren't determined enough to learn something anyway.

what's the problem? i'm not that great at coding but i might be able to help :)

thing with me is that i may have a high-ish IQ, and am generally pretty smart (if i do say so myself), but i'm mildly dyslexic and have a terrible memory. basically it means that some things totally 'click' into my head with no effort at all like one of those super-smart people, but with other things, no matter how much i work at them, they never sink in. school was particularly hard because i also hate abstract stuff - quite a practical person - so while things were all too often easy, i didn't give a shit and couldn't see any point doing abstract pointless work... meh.

Last time I took one it was part of an experiment.

A large group took a different, but standard IQ test every two weeks and our results for each were all recorded. I think I started with an IQ somewhere in the low 130s and by the seventh and final test I had managed to pump it up to 144 simply because I became more familiar with how to do the tests.

So when anyone asks, I tell them 144 because it's the most impressive, but in reality I think IQ tests are largely bullshit. They measure your ability to handle that narrow variety of test paper. They aren't a precise measure of your "intelligence", however you choose to define that.

^Taken from the results of a 6 hour long neuropsychological evalutation I had a few years back. Probably more accurate results than what tickle's online test returns

I normally score above 165, especially in tests aimed at determining linguistic perception. I also can remember almost everything, except for names of people I have a visual impression of (inluding colleagues at work etc, apparently my brain dumps the name of somebody as soon as I know how that one looks, which is very strange indeed).

Now would that be entirely accurate? Mine was 139 at the age of 20 usuing the stanford-binet tests. There are several respected IQ tests out there and soemone will administer them to do. They will likely charge you a small price. Mine was for free, as it was done by a prof who wanted to know why I rarely studied much for her class and aced it while the most of my peers struggled. I never really cared much for finding out my IQ, but it was fun for a while. Oh well, off to church with me before the wife throws a fit.

IQ doesn't measure intelligence. It measures problem solving strategies. As you learn more, your IQ increases.

When I first took the Stanford-Benet (which was designed for children), I scored @ 128. When I took the Wesschler (sp?), I scored over 140. I should be smart enough not to be impressed by this.

speaking of thick people, i was just watching the news when they were interviewing people on the street for their opinions on the new raft of environmental taxes the government plans to introduce.

"they're having a laugh, innit"
"and why is that?"
"cos we're paying too many taxes already!"

The entire premise of measuring intelligence is flawed. What you are measuring is experience.

Lets be extreme here -

A Masai tribesman is unlikely to know much calculus.

So you adjust the test to fit the environment. How that works I have no idea. You are dealing with a totally alien culture. Now if the test is to measure intelligence then it must be universal. Otherwise it is hopelessly kack.

Cup of tea anyone? As representing the greatest tea making nation I humbly offer this. A cup of tea does much for sharpening the intellect after all!

IQ doesn't measure intelligence. It measures problem solving strategies. As you learn more, your IQ increases.

Not even that... it merely measures how good you are at the sorts of questions they put on IQ tests. I know a guy who's better than I am at those, but can't figure his way out of a wet paper bag on more realistic everyday sorts of problems.

I've only ever taken one real IQ test, and I scored 154. Internet tests I've scored anywhere between about 140 and 170, but as far as I can tell in messing with them, the internet cheese tests have low and high caps which would cut off the top 5% and the bottom 5% of the population, and give the highest or lowest score possible on thier test.

A Masai tribesman is unlikely to know much calculus. But normally IQ tests do not require calculus, and I guess a Masai tribesman would not do so bad in most IQ tests. Most of those tests require abilities in perceptiveness and logic but no specific form of math.
.
BTW I have known someone who used to assemble serious IQ tests at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and I can tell you it is quite an effort gauging such tests.

Like I said an extreme example but I have seen IQ tests that included higher maths.

My premise though does stand. That as a universal method to measure intelligence it is flawed.
