What would you do if your friend became a cultist?

Here's a somewhat simple question. What wouldyou do if your friend joined a cult or a cultish religion? This could include being a nerd who worships a video game or any unscientific religion thats based around some leader or guy.

Depends on the nature of said cult. If it was a bunch of harmless weirdos, like most cults, I wouldn't care; not my place to tell him what religion he should be. If it was a Branch Davideans/People's Church/Heaven's Gate sort of thing, then I would alert his parents or try to bring him to reason.

I'd start a better cult to draw him away. One with free booze on friday nights and a place of worship with free pool tables and a bar.

:/, good point I probably should just alert the police. Hopefully I can get him away from the cult before they turn violent and militaristic.

Hey, noob, be quiet. We were joking. The name of the cult is scientology. We were joking since you said that the cult couldn't be scientific, scientology, since there is "science" in the name, couldn't be allowed in the thread.

And we've all seen The Unfunny Truth at least like, ten times. We know the evils of scientology. Lurk more and you will learn.

Me and my aspergers :(

On my digital dictionary a cult is:

n. 1. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. The followers of such a religion or sect. 2. A system or community of religious worship and ritual. 3. The formal means of expressing religious reverence; religious ceremony and ritual. 4. A usually nonscientific method or regimen claimed by its originator to have exclusive or exceptional power in curing a particular disease. 5. Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing. The object of such devotion. 6. An exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric, usually artistic or intellectual interest.n. attributive. Often used to modify another noun: a cult figure; cult films.[Latin cultus, worship, from past participle of colere, to cultivate. See kwel-1.]--cul'tic or cult'ish adj. --cult'ism n. --cult'ist n.

Luckily my friends are agnostic/atheists who aren't susceptible to the occult. So, if my friend joined a cult, I would most nearly have to beat the shit out of him because it would be incredibly out of character.

That depends, does this cult involve free food, cute priestesses or ceremonial narcotics (which would, of course, be sold at discount and have their use sanctioned as a First Amendment right)? If so, I think the Fiddlebottoms may well have found a new religion.

I'd try to talk some sense back into them, but if that didn't work, well:

I don't think that cults start out scary and weird and violent, I think they usually start out just outside the norm and then mutate from there...that being said I have a friend that is getting in with a group that is very cultish, and I talked to her, had my husband talk to her husband, and called child services because I was worried about their kids....nothing really happened though, they are on a list of people that have to be "kept an eye on" but I doubt that the agency has the time, money or interest to really investigate.
