Add S. America to World Series

This has been something that I've been thinking about for a few years, but the conclusion of the Series brought it back to my mind. Why doesnt the US invite South America to take part in our Baseball Season?
I know that we hold it very close to our hearts as an American tradition, but baseball has great development there. At the very least we could have two seperate leagues of which the winner of each faced off?
I dont see what we have to lose. There would be far more games to watch, it could result in new techniques from greater diversity, It would be more accurate to call it the "world" series?
So, why not allow S. America in?

You'll need to ask in the Moderation forum.
That's the first time I've been able to post a relevant answer in a baseball thread. :p

I dont see what we have to lose.
Except the fact that we might lose the game.

Oh really, MTAE, you're not seriously telling me that, someone who believes so strongly that America is the best at everything, thinks it has anything to fear, are you?

Makes sense. Though I know next to nothing about baseball, I imagine it could work along the same lines as the the FIFA Club World Cup, or the Intercontinental Cup in football (which the CWC replaced). The Intercontinental Cup was better (IMO), and was one match between the winners of the Copa Libertadores (the South American club competition for national champions) and the Champions' League/European Cup (the European version of the Copa Libertadores).
The Club World Cup is a mini-competition involving a number of teams, usually the champions of their various continental club competitions. Although it's organised by FIFA, and is, therefore, crap.

Actually, they've opened up colleges there where the purpose is to get drafted onto an American team. It has a huge following and many famous American players have come from there.

the US doesn't control the world series... the MLB does...

If you let South America in, would you have to exclude Cuba? Doesn't the USA still have quite strict sanctions against Cuba?

Nah, we wouldn't exclude Cuba...first off, all their best ballplayers end up here anyways. It would be a sweet scouting opportunity. Secondly, we've already played exhibition-style games vs. Cuba (I know that the Baltimore Orioles have).
Although the World Baseball Classic just started, so there's already an 'international tournament' in that mold (won by Japan earlier this year). I think they started that once baseball got booted from the Olympics.

Haven't any of you bucket-heads heard of the World Baseball Classic? Look it up and quit whining about a contest that has had the same name for over a hundred years.

How about we just abolish baseball and take up cricket or real football.

We should rename baseball "grasshopper" to complement "cricket."

There would need to be a ton of crap worked into the MLB players union and owners group.
Since the MLB just signed it's longest collective bargaining agreement in history during the World Series, and all the people within baseball are happier about the current situation, a potential merger wouldn't happen for a long, long time. And I think that it's more likely to happen with the Asian leagues, cause the Asian leagues can be more competitive (more money to spend) then the South American leagues.

And the Japanese, I don't see why not.

Good luck convincing the Players Union to extend the season, make it even more difficult do win a championship, and travel hallfway across the world at the end of the season. Good luck convincing the owners to have a potential world championship game held in a foriegn stadium. Good luck convincing the tv companies having world series games in the early morning is a good idea. It would be nice to provide more meaning to the term World Series, but it has way to many obstacles and not enough people backing it. I would love to see it, cause I like Japanese baseball as much as American baseball (GO BAYSTARS!), but its not going to happen.

There's the Baseball World Cup as well - it's been going since 1938. Britain have won it once! And Cuba have won it 25 times, or thereabouts. From what I've read, though, it doesn't seem to have any professional players in it, unlike the Classic.
