Halloween "hell house" weirdness

I don't know how many NSers know about this particular form of Christian Fundy weirdness. Some churches disapprove of Halloween. It's supposed to be satanic or something. So to keep kids from enjoying Halloween they put on an alternative event that's similar to a haunted house attraction but much weirder. They call it a hell house and they show actors portraying gays acting all gay and then being damned, bloody, fake abortion scenes, and all manner of christian crazyness.

I hope there's also a "Hell Hut" by atheists, showing the starving millions in Africa, and their parents with AIDs, with the tagline "And this is what happens in places where nobody has abortions, or uses contraeception, and nobody is gay!"

There are gays in Africa. They just have spouses and kids to keep up the appearance of being straight in order to not be shunned or even attacked by their families and communities.

Really, it's sad when people focus more on abortion and homosexuality rather than the true scary things of the world (I.E Genocide and nukes).

I saw a review of these on an extreme right wing talk show. Even he was slamming them as being blatantly stupid and re-enforcing stereotypes against christians.

I saw this on tv, they called the presenter the messenger from England and thought she was going to take the idea back home despite the fact she was working for a late night youth entertainment show.

Apperently its not very scary and fails at converting people.

" that underground Satanic cults engage in widespread sacrifice of humans."

Now the other stuff you kind of expect from crazy fundamentalists, but this is a new one on me.

And aren't the scenes the have there just delightful?

IMO this doesnt sound particularly worse than a "normal" haunted house or any number of other fake gore activities that are popular on Halloween. Meh.

Yeah, I agree. There is some real, true evil in this world and I think we need to focus on that rather than on these minor, even nonevil things. In my opinion, the greatest proof of the existence of objective evil is the fact that it is capable of convincing people to ignore it in favor of other, far lesser things.

Hooray for Catholic fundies being complete and total fucktards! Yes, Halloween was originally an "evil satanic pagan ritual night of witchcraftary", but it's evolved into something a hell of a lot less "dangerous". They're just taking away a night of fun for kids in order to "show" (and I put emphasis on the word show for a reason. There is more than one definition, you know.) them what will happen if they don't obey the strict Catholic doctrines.

I don't think these are popular in Catholic churches. I think it's more of a "born again" Christian thing involving some Baptists, Pentecostals and other assorted protestant churches. Mainly the most extreme churches of those religions.

I don't think it's Catholics doing these things...these are the fundies and the really extreme wackos doing this kind of stuff. I mean, Catholics may be opposed to homosexuality and abortion, but they don't celebrate their death and suffering or use violent images to scare the fear of hell in to people.

Very true, even though I'm not Catholic.

I'll bet 10 dollars that it's a Bible-thumping Southerner behind this :D

Nobody is "gay" in the sense that we have come to see and accept in the 'western' nations. They may still be gay, but, not openly, hence, "no one is gay".

1. The Catholics have nothing to do w/ this BS.

2. Halloween had nothing to do w/ satanism or witchcraft

Well, there is correspondence between Halloween and Samhain, but that holiday was a festival for the End of Summer and a religious rite for the dead and the underworld. Of course, its only ties to "witchcraft/satanism" would be the fact that it was an ancient Celtic festival, but that's not really the same thing.

It sounds amazing, espescially if I got sloshed before I went.

I've got enough booze to put three people fairly deep in, and that's what you'd need for one of these places.

I find the idea of a bunch of kids dressing up as skeletons to try and scare someone into giving them candy repulsive.

As someone who went to one of these sorts of things before, I can only say: Get a fucking life, you two-bit, atheist losers. They're no more evil or brain-washing than any other haunted house that includes a mad-scientist room, rape room, torture room or occult room.
Sure, the preaching is a bit much, but it was the price one had to pay considering the fact that, back in the sticks, these were the only sorts of haunted houses that could gain a wide enough audience to survive.

To me, this seems like another example of sexually repressed religious extremists spending WAY too much time thinking really intensely about other people having sex, gay sex, BDSM... Are there any tentacle scenes in these places? I wouldn't be surprised. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if those Bibles they're always waving around are just editions of de Sade with Bible covers on them.

Let's see, the inventory reports seven bottles of homebrew, three cans of bud select, half a bottle of Ketel One Vodka, a fifth of Jack Daniels and a quarter of a bottle of Orange Triple-sec. That ought to be enough to make one of these "Hell houses" quite a good time.
