Unsurprising, ES:Oblivion scooped most of them:
Next-generation role-playing game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has scooped the "Ultimate Game of the Year Award" at this year's Golden Joysticks.

The fantasy game also picked up "Game of the Year" for both the Xbox and PC at the ceremony in central London.

The awards, now in their twenty-fourth year, are awarded in 16 categories and are voted for by UK gamers.

Other winners included Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City stories on the PSP for "Handheld Game of the Year".

The win for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) version of the game means that the Grand Theft Auto series has scooped a Golden Joystick Award for the last five years running.

Your thoughts?
I personally don't think much of EA, but there's not that much competition out there anymore amongst game developers.

Also, who the hell thought of the title, "Golden Joystick"? It sounds too much like an award given out at a porn industry get together.

Oblivion?
Its a good game, but its also chock full of bugs and has a tendancy to glitch the longer you use it. For PC, at least.
Of course, that describes a lot of PC games nowadays >_>

There's a very good reason why the last few PC games I've played have been Deus Ex, Half-Life, GTA and American McGee's Alice. And that's because there hasn't been a game to match any of the first three of those out on the PC for a good few years now.

It pains me to say it, but Oblivion really isn't that good. While the graphics are shiny, it continues to be one of the buggiest games I've ever played, with many crashes to desktop and some rather strange, not to mention crippling, graphics glitches, and actually isn't all that fun.

Even without the bugs Oblivion is a lousy game. Since the world scales to match your character, it's impossible ever to make real progress in the game. The main adventure hook is so absurd as the ensure that no intelligent character would ever fall for it. And the character levelling system is far too easily broken, which then breaks the level scaling system.

Oblivion, despite its shiny graphics, is easily the weakest Elder Scrolls game of the series.

The problem is that game reviews are typically written by someone who has played teh game for 10 hours, tops. For the first 10 hours, sure, Oblivion is just about the greatest game ever made. But it quickly falls apart. Bethesda mostly lost me as a customer with this one.

You sir, need to get OOO. It makes Oblivion uber. The problem is that with just about any other mod the thing is about as unstable as a greased elephant on something illigal.

They obviously need an extra category for the rhythm games. I mean, Guitar Hero II had fucking YYZ, for cying out loud!

The new Ghost Recon game is mega-shite.
Age of Empires III as the new multiplayer hit? BOOO!

Do only 12-year-olds vote for this kind of thing, or something?

"Lightweight, but shiny, games of the year awards!"

I had some fixed level and loot mods which I figured I'd try after a run through normally.

But my normal run quickly became tedious because I wasn't gaining any levels. As such, the monsters never got tougher (even though I did through learning new spells) and the whole thing was entirely pointless.

If any random peasant can close the gates, why hasn't someone already done it?

I did have some fun with the dupe bug, though. I left huge piles of Repair Hammers in every town so I'd always have some nearby.

Now that's cool.

This is preparation for next year, when Spore will take every category, even those that it could not logically take.

Girls Choice Award : Nintendogs

I sincerely hope this award is given to the best game for prepubescent girls, and is not intended to be given to the best/most popular game among females.
