Mmm... greens of death!

As you can imagine, I attend a lot of birthday parties in my line of work. :p

I was doing what I do best at an upscale party(Who the hell caters a nine year old's birthday party?!?) when the parents got together and attempted to round up the little monsters and force them to eat this overly formal picnic. I watched as they tried to serve each of these poor kids some kind of chicken dish and a salad consisting mostly of raw spinach and a few other assorted greens.

Yes, spinach. Raw spinach. To young children. Doesn't anybody keep up with the news anymore? What flavor was the cake; jagged glass and arsenic? I take some solace in the fact that trying to feed boisterous(if overdressed) children spinach at a birthday party is an exercise in futility. Then the mother in charge offers to prepare me a plate in the kitchen. Well, I manage to avoid the spontaneous response of; "Thanks, but I'd rather get a cinderblock dropped on my head." and politely declined her offer.

So, who here still enjoys nice fresh raw spinach? :)

You know, I just had this conversation with a co-worker. She read the news about the stuff and expressed amazement that we Americans actually eat raw spinach. She just could NOT understand how we could do that.

Must be a cultural thing.

Well, this was a couple weeks ago, and I still won't eat spinach until they find out how it happened(which they just did. We were poisoned by wild pigs.). I'd also prefer some way of making sure it doesn't happen again. But then again, I'm the crazy one here. :)

I hadn't heard if it was safe again or not.

No food you eat, even if you grow it or raise it yourself, is going to be 100% safe. *shrug* I'll take my chances. I like eating. :)

It is. They traced the problem to a farm (or was it farms? I can't recall exactly.), and they figured out what caused it.

Luxury! We used to have to get up out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, work twenty hours a day at mill, for two pence a month, come home, and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

Well, of course not. :p

But I'm also not going to feed my children(who have weaker immune systems) foods that are riskier than the average. For now, I consider spinach to be a poor risk. For them. For me, the risk is more acceptable, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to limit my spinach eating. I love raw spinach on sandwiches. Yum. :)

I'm dealing with someone whose mother never made her eat anything as a kid. If she turned her nose up at dinner, her mom would cook her something else. I've gotten her to like some things that she "hated" (read: never even tried), but others I still haven't had any luck with. My gf's daughter was initially the same way, but I broke her of that crap really quickly. You'd be surprised how well having a kid see the same dinner three nights in a row works. ;)

I slice it into thin strips (about .5 inches wide) and coat it in uncooked instant mashed potato flakes, put them on a cookie sheet drizzle them with olive oil and bake them at 350 for 25 minutes.

I used to fry it that way, but it's healthier this way.

Well, it also depends on the type of squash. That works for zucchini or yellow squash (though I prefer to use seasoned bread crumbs over instant potato flakes). For things like acorn and butternut squash, you have to cook 'em completely differently.

true. I can't use bread crumbs anymore and potato flakes are quite good.
