You can find quite a lot on Project Gutenburg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page), but the book you want isn't out of copyright yet, so it's unlikely you'll find it free and legitimately online.

It does vary. In the UK, according to this (http://asp.wlv.ac.uk/Level5.asp?UserType=8&Level5=583), it expires at the end of the year 70 years after their death.
This isn't the case for everything, though; there was recently a fuss because some of Cliff Richard's copyrights were going to expire and people thought he might've been trying to... Influence... Princess Tony into extending it by letting him use one of Cliff's holiday homes.
