Evil...I think people with power can be evil. So Ill go for Government and Corporations. I don't touch religion because honestly, you cant generalize an entire religion by a couple people or things that happened in the past.

What do you think is the greatest evil?

Faith based on the bible (that includes the Torah). Nothing has caused to humankind more death, destruction, and mental retardation than the adherence to the fabricated biblical deity. Without this, humankind would be way over 1000 years ahead in its development. We would have colonies throughout the solar system and even beyond by now. But a certain group of people messed it all up by putting their unfounded ideological crap into a book over 2200 years ago and since then unfortunately more folks have believed in the crap (and some still do).

I'm amazed at how badly criminals are doing in the poll. Every day I read in the newspaper about some horrible crime that was committed.

Maybe people are just too used to it, or maybe it's not a political enough answer for some people.

Yes, because that gets government and corporations in one. It's a bit of trawler option that includes non-violent drug offenders and petty tax fraud people who just had the bad luck and bad perspective to listen to shady accountants as well as real criminals like Enron type white collars and violent criminals. So I guess some people might not check criminals for the same reason some people only eat dolphin-safe tuna.

It's probably that people tend not to include things in catch-all catagories if there's another option that fits better. Like all those polls that said that people were voting on "moral issues." Well, the war in Iraq might be a moral issue if you think that killing hundreds of thousands of people with hundreds of billions of US dollars is an immoral thing to do. But for some reason "Iraq" and "Moral Issues" were taken to be two seperate things.

Criminals are insufficiently insidious. Sure, criminals are bad, but everyone thinks so. As such, there's little risk of them getting out of control.

The government, on the other hand, has an air of legitimacy, and that makes it much more dangerous. And insidious. And evil.

I would like to defend corporations but then I will just have to spend a week constantly reiterating why Wal-Mart is not representative of a free market corporation.

Instead I will go with absolutism as the greatest evil, so by extension, organized religion and government.

They are hardly distinct, after all.

The problem with the world is that there are too many jackasses wandering around with some vague idea about "taking a stand" in their heads, and so they meddle in places they don't belong and get themselves and everyone around them killed in the process.

The greatest evil, however, is Nationalism. Governments themselves aren't bad, provided that everyone is willing to discard them the moment that serving their country becomes a problem for them.

That's certainly true.

I'm sure we agree that the government should not be controlled by corporate handlers.

I doubt he could have been fucked to manage the first one, and even if he did his tenure would have amounted to George Bush fiddling with a pen for a few minutes before saying, "Maybe we should, I dunno, invade . . . something? What's that place over there with all the oil and camels? The Middle . . . Distance? Magical Arab-land?"
To which Cheney would have replied, "I guess we can, if you want too. But lets do it later, I just got a copy of Unreal Tournament."

If people were any good at finding the right place to stand, hard hats wouldn't be nearly as in vogue as they are.
