besides ping?

Not that I'm aware. I haven't used DOS in years. :p

Surely you need a browser to be able to see websites?

Yes, you can access FTP servers using the ftp command, use Arachne or Lynx to browser the Web, use telnet to send mail via SMTP ( ), etc, etc...

Are you sure you're not thinking of Linux (or some other UNIX), Fair Progress?

To the OP: Yes, you can connect to the internet using MS DOS, but if you don't have some software to hand to do it then it's quicker to just install Windows or Linux or some other networkable OS. MS DOS has no TCP/IP stack so it's all a great big hack. And a right royal pain in the arse.

Are there still lynx servers anywhere? I haven't used one of those in years.

Quite a lot of these commands - ping, tracert, etc. - are Windows* Console commands rather than MS-DOS commands, because DOS only had them if you had some other stuff which I forget installed. In fact, no version of Windows NT (including 2K or XP) even has MS-DOS without dual-booting.

*Well, copied from UNIX...

I probably use tracert at least once a week.

And I still prefer command line FTP.

Oh yeah! If you're really bored, you can do:
C:\> ipconfig /*Con*
or...

C:\> ipconfig /release
C:\> ipconfig /renew

Does nobody listen?
Windows console != MS-DOS. It looks like it, but it isn't it.
I don't even think the TCP/IP tools for DOS supported DHCP.
